Title: Exactly Who We Are Is Just Enough
Rating: PG
Fandom: The Chronicles of Narnia
Pairing: Caspian/Edmund
A/N: Voyage of the Dawn Treader was fantastic. And of course I had my slash goggles on the entire damn time. So, here's fic!
Title from A Place For Us by Carrie Underwood (what, I'm not supposed to use the Narnia song? XD) and cut from If There's A Rocket Tie Me To It by Snow Patrol.
The stars are beautiful, but never more than when they're reflected in Caspian's eyes as Edmund hovers above. Stolen touches are all they can afford, and Edmund can see the carefully disguised fear in Caspian's gaze, the hush in his tone saying more than the words themselves. If only Narnia would call on them in times of something other than peril- celebration, perhaps, or simply to visit the land they loved and once knew so well-
But Edmund knows his responsibility. To Narnia, to Aslan, and even to Caspian, though he'd never admit the High King's superiority. Where it matters, they're equals: matched flawlessly in love and war, the stakes of each impossibly high.
It's easy to forget the evil that lurks around every corner when Caspian's hands, lips are on his skin, mapping every inch like it's the first and last chance they'll have. Edmund doesn't let himself think maybe it is, instead capturing Caspian's gasps between his lips as calloused fingers lace with his own, declarations of love that will never reach the light of day breaking his heart and making him whole. If the others hear, if they know, they never say a word: what takes place under the cover of night does not concern them, and Narnia continues on beneath the watchful gaze of its kings and queen.
Edmund knows his place in this world. He knows he matters, and that's more than he can say for the place he calls "home". But all of that pales in comparison to the starlight shining back at him as he meets Caspian's dark eyes. His fingers tangle in the king's hair and their lips meet in a kiss that, like thousands before and too few after, says "goodbye," because that's where every path leads. Every heartbeat, in perfect unison as they press close, ticking away the seconds that bring them nearer to an ending, but with Caspian's hands on his chest, that heartbeat feels more like "I love you" than the inexorable cadence of a clock.
Their time may be far from limitless, but Edmund knows that even endings aren't forever. Even as their lips whisper goodbye, their hearts beat someday, and still the stars in Caspian's eyes glitter with the truth of eternity.
