Stargate Friday & Stuff

I'll start with my thoughts on the Gates before moving on to muttering to myself :)

I want to thank everyone for not spoiling me for this ep! Yay! I knew nothing about who was going to be in it, so it was a treat to watch it unfold.

Now I did enjoy the ep, but the political commentary was a bit on-the nose for me. Not that I disagree, but I tend to prefer my entertainment to be politics-free. It's sort of what ruined MacGyver for me when every ep seemed to be some kind of social commentary. *twitch*

That said, this wasn't so bad as to be unpalatable and Sam rocked.

I'm in wholehearted agreement with everyone who squeed over Cam/Sam at the beginning, whether you see it as shippy or totally friendship. I'm sort of on the fence. I can see the ship subtext if I squint and hold my head just right ;)

I adored that they put Lorne in there as leader of SG-1. I love Lorne and was happy to see him get more mileage out of the role. And he had *lots* of lines. With Sam! Whee! Quick, someone write me Sam/Lorne pr0n! I thought it was really cute when Sam thought she and Lorne had been married before Lorne told her that she'd been married to McKay. I'm a Lorne junkie, can you tell? Probably my favorite secondary character on Atlantis.

McKay was extremely likeable to me in this ep. And hot! Those glasses really did something for him. Personally, I was happy to see that they didn't trot out the same old 'married to Jack' thing. I'd have been over the moon if it had been Daniel, but McKay works well too. I can see how that'd happen. Not that I'm being anti-Jack/Sam, but in an infinate number of universes, I'd expect to see some variety.

And poor Cam! Stuck with Geek!Daniel's hair! I'm sorry, that was a really good scene, but... I couldn't get over the damn hair. And actually, I think some really good fic could come out of that, because Cam's dad lost his legs too. Differently, sure, but it comes down to the same thing. Bitter!Cam was a fascinating character I'd like to see explored more than there was time for. Like he's leading some kind of anti-martial law movement.

And Sam cannot keep her mouth shut! I really loved that whole thing. It was easier to let her go than deal with the damage control. Sad that their Sam was killed in the explosion.

The real topper for the whole show for me was the ending. Where Cam, Vala and Teal'c confess that they all sat around for two weeks talking to an empty room. Bwah! I can see Cam being all angsty about it. He's lost Daniel and almost lost Sam last ep. He'd be all maudlin, probably sitting there eating macaroons or something.

I loved how no one wanted to talk about it. Hee! And Vala running back to hug Sam was just TOO DAMN CUTE!! I'm sorry, it was. Sam was a bit uncertain about it, but I think she took it in the spirit it was intended. Sam's not a real huggy person - hell, none of them are.

You know, from a deeper perspective, I'm delighted that they're showing that Vala isn't *only* physical with Daniel. She's physical with all of them. Teal'c most notably last ep, though he seems more genuinely pleased by her exuberence, which is an interesting character detail for him. He's always smiling one of his rare Teal'c smiles when Vala plays with him - as long as it's not when they're in dire straits on a mission. Then he gives her a sort of long-suffering glance and looks like he wants to give her a lesson in appropriateness;) Hee! You know, I could get behind some Vala/Teal'c, too. Someone write that!!!

I did see a spoiler clip on YouTube with more bonding between the gals, but I'm not saying another word about it. I have no idea when it's coming up because I have Swiss cheese for a brain these days. Me and Sam Beckett.

Okay, I'll be honest. I didn't actually *hate* this ep as much as I just thought it was, well, dumb. I thought Richard Kind was okay as a one-off and it made for some good moments, but this time, well, it just looked silly.

So, John looked hot in the ep - especially in the beginning, sitting there in his aviator sunglasses and all. (BTW, why don't *I* look that hot in aviator sunglasses? Okay, I've had a couple of people tell me I look cool, but... not so sure about teh hot. Note to self: *Never* wear my aviator specs around Lenny and Squicky, my own personal Freak Fan Club. Ew.) Teyla looked a bit exasperated by all of them, so she seemed the coolest to me. Rodney was... Rodney. Ronon was pretty good, all in all and WTF was Carson doing there? No matter, at least they didn't make him look like a babbling idiot (that I remember, anyway)

But... I have to say something about the Amazing Dancing Breasts. Yeah, like anybody could NOT notice them. You know, SGA PTB? If you *must* put your main squeeze/current bedmate/SigOther into an ep? Do NOT let her do this. Or, alternatively, don't MAKE her do this. Give her lines, let her screw Sheppard, whatever, but do NOT put her in a dress that emphasizes her breasts like that. It's stupid and a little ridiculous. I don't mind Sheppard as Kirk. It sort of works for me, but damn... that dress was *horrible*. I virtually couldn't concentrate on the poor woman's lines because OMG! The Breasts of DOOM! Which truly weren't as enormous, viewed in profile as they appeared, but damn.

And Wardrobe Mistress, whoever you are? Please to be telling TPTB that something like that only opens up the show to ridicule. Seriously. Show off cleavage to your heart's content - I have nothing against cleavage, despite being a straight woman. I've never *once* complained about Teyla's outfits, which should tell you something. But that particular dress? Was *beyond* horrible.

Okay, so moving PAST teh Breasts Of Doom, I still thought the show was a bit cheesy. Kolya's end was... well, sort of dumb. I pretty much hated the whole "Gunfight At The OK Corral" feel of it - that Sheppard was just THAT much quicker on the draw than Kolya. Yeah, I know John's got plenty of reasons to hate the man, but... after building Kolya up to the level you have, to end him that way felt WAY stupid. He deserved better. Of course, being SciFi, no one is ever truly dead, right? I guess I can keep my hopes up that there's a more dignified end for Kolya somewhere in the future.

And um... this is already cut, but I'm going to express some personal opinion here, so feel free to move on now...

Okay... I'm generally not very critical of TPTB on either SG-1 or Atlantis. As far as SG-1 goes, they've never done anything I truly hated. I know lots of people feel differently, but I've always been able to find some rationale behind the eps. SGA? Not so much.

I've hated what they've done to Carson thus far in this season. And I've heard the spoilers and actually, if that's the way they're going to use the character, then yeah, he's better off dead. They didn't have to make him the bravest guy in the expedition, but making him so silly was a waste of space. It really was. People, you don't really don't have to work *that* hard for laughs. If you do, you're in the wrong business.

I've heard the Liz spoilers and... I'm sorry, I was never that big of a Liz fan, so... I dunno. I'm actually excited to see what Sam can do with the mission. I really am. Objectively, Amanda's a stronger actor, so I think it'll be interesting to see how that all plays out.

And Lorne. Poor Lorne. I fear they're going to make you silly too, which will make me very sad. Not saying anything more until the ep airs, but the vague spoilers I heard don't bode well for you.

*sigh*

Okay, I'm thinking that the Naproxin has kicked in... hopefully. I'm trying a new method of writing. Which is, if I can't seem to find my writer's voice, then I have to get off my dead ass and *do* something.

Today, this entailed killing the weeds sprouting in my backyard, which consists of river rock and bark. Anything green is dead. After that, which wasn't terribly taxing considering it consisted of walking around with a squirt bottle of vegetation-killer, I decided to fix the curtains in my living room. Yeah, the ones that bit the dust after the company Holiday party.

I took down the blinds and washed them on the front porch with that Windex for outside windows stuff. I had to rehang the curtain rod and I washed the inside of the windows while I was at it. I ironed the curtains, which I'd washed ages ago. Rehung the blinds and the curtains.

And it freaking *killed* my back. Oye. Hopefully, it's taught my writer-brain a lesson. Write damnit, or I'll put you to hard labor!

My front window now looks very nice.
