Sometimes, when it's really hot and humid out and I'm walking down the street, the sweet smell of musty wood fills my nostrils. It's a heavy smell, and one that I associate with fresh donuts placed out in the damp dining room of the beach house.
Whew, do I miss the beach.
In the meantime, it has been a relaxing and lazy time in Ithaca. Some days, I fall asleep right after coming home from work, only to meet up with friends when I wake up around 11 p.m. or midnight. Last night I went out with Andy and his friend Eddie. Eddie graduated from Cornell in English and Spanish; his dad is from Ecuador and his mom lived in Mexico; and Eddie is moving out to Oregon for a while. That's definitely a friend to visit.
Other days, I stay awake and share outside adventures with friends. This past Saturday, Andy used his summer bonus to take me out on the town. We hiked down to First Dam and played in the water; we had dinner at Tamarind; and we went bowling. On Monday, we joined Roketkar, Robbie and Chach (yes, that nickname is what you think it is -- don't ask) on a trip to the swimming hole. We drank beers, cleaned up the litter, splashed around, and built a fire. The boys also spent a significant amount of time howling like cavemen, while Chach and I rolled our eyes.
Other days, I have my own adventures. I've been reading, riding my bike, walking through town, and just generally enjoying my own company. Quaint things keep me occupied: making a care package for Jess, making jewelry, preparing my own iced coffee, plotting new ways to improve my bike.
Exciting things:
- Finally bought a rear rack for my bike! I attached a crate with a bungee cord, so now I can carry heavy loads around without killing my back.
- First heavy load to ride the rack? Potting soil!
- Spoke to Jess on the phone in Spanish for 1.5 hours the other day.
- Applying to ACLU job and terrified I might won't get it.
- Doing water aerobics on my lunch break with Kerry and Denise. Nothing like sun and water in the middle of a WORK DAY.
