And so, out of the whole of Memorial Day weekend, I picked last night to go out.

I went with Ellen and her friend up to Ruloff's for Monday night karaoke. It was a little awkward, as Cat makes me feel really uncomfortable. However, a little booze and some conversation with the bartender fixed that. It fixed things enough for me to actually get up and sing: Proud Mary and Subterranean Homesick Blues and the Boy is Mine. Oh, God. I eventually convinced the bartender to pour me a free drink--he picked rum and coke easily enough as my favorite.

Oh, holy hell. There were also those two shots from the guy with the chipped tooth. Cat's guy friend. That's why I was so drunk when I left at midnight.

On my way down the hill, I stopped in a pizza place for a slice. I cannot remember for the life of me how it started, but I soon found myself having a half-hour conversation in Spanish with the guy behind the counter, who was from Peru. He's from Lima, and in his two years in the U.S. he's lived in New Jersey, Michigan, North Carolina, New York City, Connecticut, and Ithaca. He wants to stay here and go to school, but he also just likes meeting new people and learning from them. Ah, la vida de la lengua. I think I would have been walking on clouds out of that pizza place even if it hadn't been for the booze.

Then I met Andy at Beef's place. I talked with Missy for a while, shared garlic knots with the boys, and explored Beef's basement after a fuse blew out the whole upstairs apartment. I swear, there are canyons in that basement--pathways of smooth cement lower than the rest of the basement floor. I ended up walking out with a video cassette of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and I'm pretty sure something was said about coming back for the books.

::sigh::

This evening was a goodbye dinner with Jackee at the new Thai place on 13. I'm going to miss that girl. But somehow I'm getting a pet rat out of it.
