Character's Name: Mello (Mihael Keehl)

Timeline: Just after chapter 77
Canon Resource Link: Ye Olde Wikipedia for Mello and Death Note; also Mello at Death Note Wikia.

Personality:The first thing you should probably know about Mello is that he’s a legitimate genius. He’s brilliant - quick to think and act, a cunning strategist - and he spent a good part of his early years in training as a potential successor to the great detective L, so he’s highly adept at critical thinking, problem solving, logical reasoning, and strategic planning. He wasn’t one of the final two candidates selected to succeed L for nothing.

He isn’t necessarily an unkind person, but Mello can be downright ruthless if it’s to his advantage - and it often is. One doesn’t rise through the ranks of the Mafia by being a doormat, after all. He’s declared his intent to win, no matter the cost; all manner of illegal activity, even murder, is an acceptable means to that end. He knows his way around a good number of firearms and explosives, and while Mello may not present the most physically intimidating presence, he’s definitely not weak. However, he isn’t completely heartless, either - during their face-off, he admits to Soichiro Yagami that he didn’t actually intend to kill him, in direct contradiction of his threats. Toward the end of the manga, he shows genuine remorse for his involvement in his friend Matt’s death, and even a measure of basic respect for Kiyomi Takada, whom he kidnaps and forces to disrobe in order to ensure no tracking devices are in operation, though not before providing her a blanket for modesty. This simple kindness later ensures his downfall, as the blanket allowed Takada to conceal and retain the piece of the Death Note she had hidden on her person, which she then used to kill Mello.

Mello is passionate, incredibly driven; his ambition is perhaps one of his greatest strengths. However, that ambition is tainted somewhat because Mello suffers from a vicious inferiority complex. He’s obsessed with being the best, and if he has one fatal personality flaw, it’s that he sometimes allows his emotions to cloud his judgment. Mello is by no means a loose cannon, though; he does not explode with emotional outbursts at the slightest provocation. Mello is also neither a sadist, sociopath, nor a psychopath - he does adhere to a certain moral code, albeit one that is quite a bit skewed. Justice is what he wants, after all - revenge for his mentor’s death, but a certain kind of justice all the same.

What your character can offer: Well, he is a genius. He’s also pretty handy with firearms and explosives, is good bossing people around exhibits some leadership qualities, and did I already mention the part where he’s incredibly driven to succeed?

What items will they be bringing with them? In addition to his fierce black leather ensemble - a hooded coat; semi-automatic pistol; two extra magazines in his coat pockets; three and a half bars of chocolate, also in his coat pockets; a rosary; pair of large mirrored sunglasses.

MISCELLANEA: Other things of note that may or may not be relevant to gameplay; to be added to over time. [Last updated 18 March 2010]

• What's in a name? - Mello's taken from not long after Soichiro Yagami discovered his true name, so he's a little more cautious about even giving out his alias - he doesn't know everyone who is residing in Discedo, and there's always a chance Kira might be among the ruined city's inhabitants. He'll usually introduce himself as M, just to be safe. Under no circumstances will he disclose his true name (Mihael Keehl), because it is one of the two pieces of information needed in order to kill him via the Death Note, and ICly, just about the only way any other character will ever find this out is via telepathy. Please get in touch with me first to discuss anything relating to Mello's true name!

• And about that face ... - Likewise, since an unobscured view of the face is the other key piece of information needed for an instant Death Note-induced death, Mello is extremely careful about who sees his face. Regardless of what icons show, please assume Mello's face is shadowed, only partially viewable, or hidden behind his sunglasses (yes, even at night).

• What did he say? - As far as languages are concerned, it's reasonable to assume Mello is fluent in both English and Japanese; he grew up in an orphanage in England, and he's shown speaking directly to members of the Japanese task force without any communication barriers. Also, he's a genius, and it seems reasonable that the Wammy's House curricula included at least some language study - you can't expect to be the world's greatest detective if you're unable to speak with people directly. I've taken the liberty of including Italian in the list of languages Mello speaks more or less fluently, due to the fact that he spent a good number of years ingratiating himself with the Mafia. I also believe it's reasonable to assume (under the "lol genius" clause) that Mello's able to get by in a number of other languages as well - most likely French, German, and Russian, at the very least. English, however, will be his default language for the most part, and more or less unaccented, as he's probably made an effort to "blend in" in the United States. An occasional Britishism may slip out from time to time.

• Security, please. - Mello's not super great at hacking (he most likely prefers having other people do that sort of gruntwork for him), but again, he is a genius and more than likely has had some training in cryptography for his detective studies at Wammy's House. I've set his default security levels around 70 percent unhackable; likewise, he's probably only skilled enough to hack other posts set about 70 percent or below. If you send him something encrypted, he'll mirror it to the best of his ability.

• Currently residing - Latimir 114, but as of current update, he has not told this bit of information to anyone in the city, and would have been extremely careful to make sure he wasn't followed. Please get in touch first if there is a good reason why another character should know where Mello lives! No longer living in Latimir 114 as it was smashed to bits in the blizzardpocalypse. Mello died, was sent home briefly after revival, and re-arrived; his new residence is Marshall 315.

• Inventory - Mello has at his disposal:

- one (1) fierce black leather ensemble
- one (1) a hooded coat
- one (1) semi-automatic pistol; magazine loaded and half-empty
- two (2) extra magazines; kept in his coat pockets
- one (1) rosary (worn at all times)
- one (1) pair of large mirrored sunglasses smashed in Latimir collapse

• Chip status - currently in.

• Death count - one.
