Chapter 1 - Chapter 2 - Chapter 3 - Chapter 4

At The End Of The Tunnel

November 22, 1997

“You really don't know where he is?” the man questioned him for what seemed like the millionth time.

The little brunette head shook feebly as he desperately tried to prevent eye contact. Another one of the endless flaws with him. It didn't matter if he could think of the best lies in the world his eyes always gave it away. All his emotions shine through as bright as the sun.

Unfortunately though, this task was hard to do when the man kept putting his face in the path of his own.

The black haired man let out a deep sigh as he realized that he probably wasn't going to receive his answer. “Hmm... That's not like Shou. Actually he's been acting up a lot lately,” he went silent for a moment before continuing. “Why don't we give him a surprise to cheer him up, hm?”

The leader turned around pointed towards one of the henchmen in the corner. “Bring the bucket.”

Kai instantly felt his face pale. They couldn't couldn't be serious about doing this again could they? This soon? He was still trying to get over the last one. This could not be happening again.

The brunette's thoughts were still racing as the man brought over the pale and set it down in front of him. The silence in the room stretched for what seemed like a millenia before one finally got impatient and kicked him in the back, grumbling out a 'Hurry up!'

The teen let out a soft whimper and subconsciously curled even more in on himself. The brown eyes flitted towards the leader for a moment with anticipation in his eyes. This emotion was quick to leave though and Kai felt himself frown. Why wasn't he doing anything? Last time when another had gotten impatient from earlier he had yelled at him, so what was so different this time. Surely he had seen.

And he was right. The man had seen, but he just didn't care. In fact it was as if the others impatience had transferred over to him.

“Well? Come on. You really should be kinder to us since we fed you and made you a part of our little party. Isn't that right?” he arrogantly sneered. He then quickly grabbed the brunette's hand and placed it inside of the bucket. “Now pick one. “

Kai quickly curled his fingers around one of the many slips of paper and pulled his arm out, fighting back tears as his scabs reopened from the movement.

Before he could even attempt to read it the blacked hair man snatched it out of his small palm and quickly scanned it's contents. All kinds of anticipation filled the atmosphere in the few seconds it took to comprehend the two words neatly printed on it.

A few more seconds passed before a malicious grin spread over the man's face. Instead of telling his listeners he quickly passed the note all around the small room, causing evil grins to form on their faces too. After the last one read he handed the slip back to his leader mumbling a soft 'We'll go get the stuff.'

“I bet you want to read this Nameless,” he chuckled turning back to the brunette on the floor. He bent over him and held the slip about an inch from his nose, making the brunette's eyes cross and immediately blur his vision.

C-cleaning Cereal? No, that doesn't even make sense. The brunette tried to make his head go farther into the concrete floor to get some distance.

Candle Ceremony.

Kai felt his stomach sink. That could mean anything. All he knew was that candles involve fire and the last thing he ever wanted to do with them had to do with fire. Sure, candles may not seem that bad but look at pinatas. They had simply been a fun little party activity to him until he was the actual object. He didn't think he'd ever be able to look at one again.

Would he even see one again? What about school, or Aoi or Ruki or Reita.

“Rei-ta...” he found himself croaking out.

“Hmm?” the forgotten leader questioned. “What was that? Reda?”

But Kai wasn't even listening. No, he was too far off into his thoughts to even be concerned despite how serious the situation was. Back to about when he had just got into his second year of high-school.

The year before had been just fine, great in fact. He hadn't had any issues with finding companions seeing as his brother and his friends were all a year ahead of him. He was a pretty remarkable student with his grades. He had even managed to get into 2nd year math and language, conveniently in the same class as his brother too.

Flashback

March 16, 1996

“Come on Kai! Just help me with number five and I'll stop bugging you, promise.” Ruki pleaded as he kept mercilessly poking his sibling with the end of his pencil.

Said sibling let out a large huff and leaned his head back so that it was resting on the elders legs propped up on the couch. “But I already did that with the last two. And it's not helping if you just wait until I figure out the answer to pay attention!”

“But it's so hard! How and why am I supposed to know three consecutive integers? Why do I have to know how to do the four step method to solve a problem. No one is going to give a crap if I do or not. What do they do for me in life? When will I ever use it?”

“But Ruki!” the younger crossed his arms and let out a huff, “Your starting to sound like Uruha after science.”

“Yeah, but that's different. He can actually pull it off,” the brunette replied.

“How, in anyway, is it differen-” Kai began to argue before he was interrupted by the doorbell ringing.

The younger brunette let out a sigh and said in a stern tone, “Just actually, I don't know... try the problem and I'll see where you're messing up when I get back.”

“You don't even think I might get this one right?” his sibling said with a fake offended look on his face.

“Not a chance.”

The brunette walked all the way to the front door and was quick to swing it open to reveal the person on the other side.

In an instant a wide smile set itself on his face, “Hey Reita! What brought you here? I can tell it's urgent by the fact that you look like your about to pass out from lack of oxygen on my porch.” he babbled, slightly concerned at how hard the teen was breathing. The blond was hunched over with his hands on his knees wheezing.

“I swear Reita for how thin you are, you sure are out of shape,” the other forgotten brunette cut in.

“Did you finish that problem yet?” his brother called back.

“Yeah, in a moment. Just one question what's twelve times fifteen?”

“Oh my God Ruki, how are you still in 2nd year math?! Just work it out!” he exclaimed, being promptly answered with an annoyed huff from the living room. He turned back to the blond on the porch who seemed to have finally gathered himself enough to speak properly.

“Hey Kai. Umm... I hope I didn't interrupt anything.” he said, sending nervous glances back towards the living room. “Listen, uh can you come with me for a little while?”

Kai couldn't help but notice that Reita kept glancing around everywhere but his face and when he did let his eyes flit over to him for a quick second they snapped away again. Why was he so nervous?

“Sure. Ruki and I were just doing some math homework,” he replied cautiously, afraid that the wrong words might make the blond even more anxious than he already was.

The blond spikes softly bounced up and down as the owner nodded his head. “Good, then we've got like and hour...?”

“He's still on question five out of fifty.”

“Okay then we have two hours.”

“You know I can still hear you guys right? I might get more of these problems right if you all just gave me a little bit more confidence and motivation,” the elder brunette interjected again.

“I've tried that! But you just complain about how hard it is and how you'll never get it right. How am I supposed to work with that?” the younger questioned back and was met with silence. Perfect. He had shamed his brother into silence.

A tug on his arm brought him back to and he turned his attention back to the blond waiting outside.

“So you ready to go?” the blond asked. The brunette replied with a small 'yeah' and proceeded to walk out of the house. He was about to close the door when his brother's voice called out one final time.

“Oh, and Reita if he's not back by ten I'm going to murder you.”

- -

After walking for some time they pair found themselves walking through tall grass. Kai didn't have the slightest idea of where they were while Reita seemed to know the way perfectly. The blond hadn't said a word after they had left the house and had simply started speed walking down the street, stopping every few minutes so the brunette could catch up.

“Reita, where are we going?” he asked after another five minutes of walking had passed. Despite the warm spring weather then moon still decided that it should rise early making everything dark and leaving little, if at all any light to see. Now Kai wasn't a very coordinated person to begin with, so him plus no light plus tall grass, making what little he might of actually been able to see of the ground invisible?... Nothing good could come of that.

And no more than two seconds after that thought had passed through his mind he ran straight into Reita's chest causing him to instantly fall down. On his way down he had somehow managed to knock the blond off balance too that had turned to face him.

The two landed on the ground with a loud thump accompanied by surprised yelps as they went down. The blond quickly lifted his head to check on the brunette's condition when he couldn't help but notice something. Lips. Or Kai's lips for that fact. It didn't even matter that the brunette was rubbing the back of his head indicated that it hurt.

He had brought him out here to confess properly but... his lips were just right there. Kai was smart. He had been around Miyavi's perverted jokes enough to fill in the blanks. He could just...-

“I'M TALKING TO YOU!” a voice shouted and sent a sharp kick to his back. The brunette screamed and tried to curl in on himself, but the other wouldn't have it. He flipped the small teen over onto his back and set his boot covered foot onto the brunette's head.

"It seems you really need a reality check here Nameless," the man ground out, putting all his force on the brunettes head under his shoe before lifting it.

"Oh and look. It's time for our next activity." the man said just as footsteps could be heard coming from down the hall. "Just put the stuff over there."

Despite the pain it brought Kai turned his head ever so slightly to the side so he could catch a glimpse of the new items. The one in the front was carrying a large cage, barely enough room for someone of five foot to lay down. And behind him were each of the others that had left, all empty handed except for a long candle.

Against his will the brunette felt himself begin to shake again out of reborn fear. Already so soon? And why was this a surprise for Shou? What kind of gift was this?

Kai couldn't stop contemplating this as they surrounded him and led him towards the already set up cage. They had put supporters under both ends so that it was suspended and set all their candles under the open space beneath. Extra candles had also been perfectly balanced over the cage, whether they were glued down or attached the teen wasn't quite sure.

All of the brunette's thoughts seemed to slow dramatically as they lightly placed him inside the metal space, taking extra care as to not disturb the objects on top.

“Cold...” he found himself whispering. The cool metal against his burning skin made a large contrast.

"Boss, look," one of them said as he pointed towards the window. "Shou's back." The others all rushed over to the window in time to see the dark blond disappear into the bottom floor of the factory.

"Hmm..." the man said as he finished tying the cloth around the brunette's eyes that was facing the opening. No reason to have him get wax in his eyes was there?

The black haired man pulled out a zippo from his pocket and held it to the wick underneath.

"Perfect timing."

- -

"Ruki, I called the police while you were gone." Miyavi said as the brunette and Aoi came in through the threshold. "They said that they were busy at the moment, but we could come down tomorrow in the afternoon."

"Tomorrow? What could be so important that they can't see us now?" the brunette began to rant but stopped when Aoi placed a light hand on his shoulder.

"Ruki, it's fine we can just continue tomorrow. It's late anyway." he said with a light smile and gave a quick squeeze with his hand before letting go.

"Aoi-kun is right. It won't do anyone good if we're tired. Let's head back and come here tomorrow." Uruha suggested and with that everyone silently agreed and began to make their way to the door.

Ruki began to shut the door after Aoi but paused.

"Aoi?" he called out before the black haired man could begin to walk down the steps. The other turned around and looked at him with a questioning face.

“Eh?” he asked, but the other had fallen silent. “Ruki?” he questioned again, letting his concern slip into his voice as he retraced his steps back to the door next to the brunette. The teen kept staring on through with his head lowered to the ground.

The brunette just continued to shuffle his feet on the porch. A sparkle caught the black haired teens attention. The drop was quickly followed by others, till soon they seemed to pour.

“Hey Ruki, what's wrong?” the teen put a hand under the pale chin and lifted only to see more tears streaming down the brunette's face. The brunette simple shook his head and continued to sob quietly.

“Ruki please,” the other begged. “Just tell me what it is.” This was the second time he had ever seen the other cry to hard. The other time being when he found out his brother did drugs with Yune.

The other took a few more moments before speaking. “It's killing me! It's killing me not knowing where he is and what's happening to him. He's one of the nicest people on Earth and this is how he's repaid? That's not right!” he screamed not caring if the neighbors heard. Even Yune had come to warn them and he knew that Yune wouldn't come within a hundred miles of this place because he knew the other would throttle him. And it was probably for drugs. The fire quickly left his eyes and he felt this begin to well up with tears again.

“It's a gang Aoi. W-what... what if they rape him? He's not strong enough for that. He never was very independent so he relied on his connections with the others around him. What are they doing to him?”

Throughout all of this the black-haired teen remained silent and just listened. Once the brunette seemed to have finished talking he moved forward and pulled the other into a hug. He propped his chin on top of the brunette locks due to the extreme height difference and gently swayed them side to side. No words were needed for this. The brunette had been giving reassurance to others all day, now it was his turn.

The pair just stood there with only the sounds of the occasional sob and hiccup from Ruki, who was steadily soaking the other's shirt. Slowly, but surely, the brunette's tears came to a stop, but he didn't move. He just buried his head further into the others chest as the chilly November air whipped around them.

It was calming. It was always calming with Aoi. The teen just gave off an atmosphere of peace to all of those around him, which was very helpful to Ruki who was always wound up with anxiety. He always knew when and what to say in practically every situation. But more importantly, he was there. Sometimes just to be the one person to listen to whatever you could possibly have to say.

A few more moments passed before Aoi pulled back and gave the brunette his personal space back. He started to make his way to the stairs but paused. He seemed to think for a moment before turning around to lightly place his lips on top of the brunette's head for no more than a few seconds, then quickly made his way back down the street.

The teen soon disappeared around the corner, but Ruki didn't notice. A hand slowly reached up to touch the spot on his head where the other's lips had just been. He felt warm inside from head to toe regardless of the frigid air. However, a frown adorned his features as he tried to think. All of his confusing thoughts were running through his head too fast for him to focus.

What was this feeling in his chest?

Comments: DAMN. YOU. TESTING/PNEUMONIA.

It seems like the world was against me these past few weeks for cursing me with testing, but just before I can rejoice with it being over, it decides to give me pneumonia. NOT FUN. I was down for like... 2 weeks. That's the most 'nothing' I think I have ever done. Breathing had never been so hard. I couldn't even walk the short distance to the fridge, but I didn't want to eat because it hurt so much to swallow. I had to have some family come in and help me. Ugh... better now, but seriously?

Anywayz aside from my illness, I'm finally starting to develop the secondary pairing of Ruki and Aoi! Also since I suck at describing I got the candle ceremony thing from a scene in Death Bell (Korean horror film). Also thanks for reading. Feel free to tell me what you think of it! (^^”)
