Those times were peaceful, the times that they would work together in their gardens. At times it was more that one of them worked while the other was just nearby, but it carried the same compassion. During the summers their homes would bloom in a myriad of colors. Sometimes during the winter they would head to the southern areas of America’s country, although the tropical plants there were more than happy to grow themselves. Working the land, whether to grow crops or flowers, was an intimate connection and working each other’s lands was a blessing. Especially when they had been long apart. Nights would be spent in each other’s arms and those quiet days could then be spent creating a memory for the other. In the times they were apart, the gardens could bring a smile to their faces, even in the winter when the plants were dormant and obscured by snow.

They would often begin with the weeding, one leading the other following, it depended on the job. Sometimes America would go through first, literally weeding out the trouble, while England followed and cleaned up the roots he had missed. Other times England would begin, leaving the more harrowing and stubborn plants behind for America to pull up. Working in silence or chatting the entire way, they would move with an innate knowledge of the other, having done this kind of activity together for centuries. They had started the process when America was small. England would bring him a plant and he would care for it, while England would take home others.

Later they would work on planting. Flowers of all sizes and shapes, shrubs or forbs, they would plant them and help them grow to their fullest potential. Some would prove impossible to grow in the differing climates of their homes, but they would do their best. America would often try to create hybrid flowers for the smaller nation, one that was part English and the other American. England would plant the seeds into a pot and see what they would grow into. Some of the plants were so beautiful he couldn’t bear to plant them outside where they could be damaged. They stayed perched on the window sill of his kitchen, getting just enough sunlight. Those delicate plants were somewhere he could smile at them every day and think of the one who gave them to him.

Many ornamental plants from around the world adorned America’s garden, as people from those lands brought plants that reminded them of home. England had been gifted with many plants as well due to his love of gardens. Most nations’ gardens looked this way, but there was something that England and America would do for each other. Always at the center of their personal gardens would be a rose bush. If anyone ever asked they could pretend that it was a tribute to their national flower, but they knew the truth. It was a gift to the other, a remembrance of the one they loved. A place where they could go to touch the delicate petals and dream of being with the other, even when an ocean separated them.
