The song was upbeat and quick. Banjos strummed. Fiddles sang. Spoons clapped together in quick hands or were stroked rhythmically along the uneven surface of a washboard. A harmonica occasionally spoke up. Hands clapped. Watchers cheered as a dancer performed a perfect turn. The caller stood at the front of it all, broad hat on his head, and shouted the next step in the dance.
America sat grinning watching the colorful dancers shift and turn. His blood hummed with the rhythm of the Western Square Dance. It was an excuse to wear clothing that one would never wear otherwise. Big hair and cowboy hats, brightly colored clothing and large belt buckles. They were broken out on occasions like these, barn dances and rodeos.
“Sweetie, you should eat more, growing boy like you.” America smiled at the old woman who had made it her mission to feed him all night. She was covered in old square dance ribbons from her younger days and she made the most delicious food. He could not get enough of it.
“Thank you, Mrs. Smith.” She patted him affectionately on the head and went back to her task of feeding other grateful attendees. America finished his plate quickly as the current song ended to loud applause. With a shift of musicians a line dance had begun and he hurried quickly to join it.
