America sat on the wide bank of the Mississippi, one of the lifelines of his land, of his people. The water seemed almost sluggish in places, powerful and quick in others. Its depths held plant and animals and markers of the people that had been using the river since it was discovered. The silty water moved on its path to the sea, carrying life in so many forms.
He remembered the days when he had been young and people would send their goods down the river to New Orleans and then take the arduous journey back up to their towns in the north. When the steamboat changed the way life worked on the Mississippi, America had made sure he was on one, watching how time and space seemed to shrink. In a frontier that once seemed so huge, it now only took days to travel from one end of the large river to the other.
Streams and smaller rivers came from places that were hundreds of miles away, carrying snowmelt from the Rockies, water from the Great Lakes, rain that fell on hillsides and open plains. Water that were the veins of any nation, many of them came together to form the longest river in North America.
America could remembers the battles that were fought over these very waters. He had fought France, Spain and England for this river, so that his people in the middle of the land could reach the rest of the world. People and places had become famous because of this river. Great literature had been written about it. The river built and the river destroyed.
America smiled, “The Mississippi River will always have its own way; no engineering skill can persuade it to do otherwise...”
