Royals were not made, they were born. At conception their lot was cast. They could be born a King, filled with the power to lead and the power to fight. They could be a Queen, filled with magic that and a valuable bartering chip in the battle between the four kingdoms. Sometimes, they were born a Deuce, which was considered a blessing or a bane depending on the Kingdom. Sometimes they were born with no notable number at all.
Arthur's brother had been a King, but his health had caused him to pass on before his time. Spades had only been gifted with one King, his other brothers had been born with other numbers, sent off to do their own duties. That had left the Kingdom of Spades without a ruler, casting it into a competition for what other Kingdom would place one of its own as King.
Arthur stared at the gilded doors of the church. He knew that waiting beyond them was representatives of two kingdoms, about to watch a King take his place. Arthur couldn't help that he had been born a Queen, but he still couldn't believe he was about to do this. The Kingdom of Diamonds had been oddly blessed with two Kings. Arthur was about to marry the younger one. This one's twin had been born a charming Deuce, apparently he was quite the able ambassador. Matthew had been busily smoothing feathers in his brother's new Kingdom, while Alfred had seemed inadvertently determined to ruffle them.
Arthur tried to look on the bright side, although he was failing miserably. At least, he did not have to marry the older brother who had been luckily married off to a Queen from Hearts a few years ago. Francis had been considered as a match for Arthur, they had come together like oil and water. He did fondly remember Francis's younger brothers, the King he was about to marry and the Deuce. He was simply having a hard time imagining Alfred as anything other than the little boy who eagerly brought him things he had found in the garden. When he had seen him marching into the throne room only a few weeks ago, the man he was now resembled little of that small child. He had come in naked sword in hand, helmet under one arm and declared himself King of Spades. His face had been smudged by cannon powder and there had been a knick across one cheek. Arthur had only recognized him due to that errant tuft of hair that always seemed to be sticking up. He had plopped down in the King's seat without a word, grinning widely at his new subjects. He seemed oblivious to their glares, knowing that they couldn't actually do anything about it.
Alfred had conquered the Kingdom of Clubs to take Spades, and in the process getting Arthur as Queen. It was their duty now to marry and rule the Kingdom. Duty. Duty. Duty. Arthur had needed to repeat it to himself many times since he was a child, ever since someone explained what being Queen meant. Arthur took one last deep breath as the doors began to open. His future would be sealed today.
The room was resplendant, just as he had expected. The people he had never thought he would rule over lined the aisles. It was rare for a Queen to stay in the Kingdom he or she was born in. In fact, this was the first time it had happened for several hundred years. The people whispered that it was a sign, that perhaps Spades could become the most powerful Kingdom once again. Arthur hoped it was true. After all, Alfred was young and would probably be easily formed into a decent King. Arthur risked a glance up from where he walked. Alfred was smiling at him, even though he barely knew him. It was as if he had waited his whole lofe for this day. Arthur considered that Alfred may make a half-decent companion as well.
He reached the alter and he took Alfred's outstretched hands. They felt a little rough, no doubt from years of learning weapons so that he could lead armies, often the fate of a King without a throne. Arthur looked up into Alfred's eyes as the priest began to speak. Alfred looked so deriously happy as though he could dream of nothing else but to be here in this moment with Arthur. Arthur pushed back the suspicion that it was all for show, he didn't want his discomfort to show on his face.
The words seemed to blur together, but Arthur still found it possible to focus on Alfred's eyes. They were steadfast and never wavered, he had set his mind to this and this was something he would do. That quality would be good for Spades, Arthur thought. He became so lost in his thoughts he created an odd pause when they were agreeing to their vows.
"I do." he said after a moment. Alfred's smile grew even wider, wider than Arthur had believed possible. The grin was contagious and he felt a small smile tugging at his own lips. Perhaps this would all be fine, his prospects could have been worse. If Clubs had won... he didn't even want to think of that. This was after all his wedding day. He supposed he would make the best of it. He even chuckled slightly when Alfred blushed before kissing him. His lips were soft and warm and Arthur was surprised by the flutter in his stomach.
The bells clanged loudly announcing their marriage. Arthur ignored the lusty wink the Francis gave them, although it made Alfred blush considerably. Arthur gave the younger man a squeeze on his hand, a silent nudge to tell him to ignore his insufferable brother. They walked out of the church and got into the carriage and for the first time they were alone.
Arthur couldn't find a single thing to say.
