Out of all the powers an alien criminal could potentially have, Bridge never would have guessed that changing three of his fellow Rangers into young children would be one of them.
And even if he conceded that was possible, it never occurred to him that it could last more than a few minutes.
Now, he and the others had their hands full.
"I sure hope this is only temporary," Sky groaned for about the hundredth time that day, chasing two giggling Zs across the rec room. Sam tried to grab one of them, but she dodged out of the way, running between his legs and making him fall over. "I really, really hope it is. I don't know if I can stand this for too much longer."
"Miss Manx is working on a solution," Commander Cruger informed them. Jack was strapped in a makeshift sling across his back; the little Red Ranger had seized one of Cruger's dreadlocks and was happily sucking on the end. "And if we're lucky, it will simply wear off on its own and they'll be back to normal in no time."
'No time' still isn't quick enough, Bridge thought. He liked his teammates, of course, but didn't like them quite as much when they were like this. Syd was sitting on his shoulders and amusing herself by pulling his hair, making him wince every time she tugged hard enough.
"Doggie! Pet doggie!" Syd then cried out as she reached for Cruger.
"No, Syd, you can't pet him because he's your Commander and I don't think he'd like it," said Bridge patiently, pulling one of her hands back when she tried to grab and absorb the metal part of the nearby CD rack, presumably to punish him.
"WANNA PET DOGGIE!" she shrieked, making all of the adults wince.
"In the meantime, we have no other choice except to care for them, no matter how hard it gets," Cruger said, rubbing his ears.
"And hope that no other alien criminals show up in the meantime," Bridge said glumly, watching as Sky finally managed to seize one of the Zs and wrestle her to the ground, making the clone vanish. He noticed that Sky almost looked like he was enjoying himself in spite of his complaining, trying to hide a smile as he let her pin him, and the clone appeared again to help.
As the afternoon wore on, Bridge quickly grew tired of having to care for his friends. He'd never liked kids very much- it was a side product of being constantly bullied when he himself was younger- and he had no idea what to do to entertain his small teammates. It didn't help that he and Sky seemed to be the only ones willing or able to take on the task; Cruger helped as much as he could, but he had his Commander's duties to take care of. Sam seemed as lost as Bridge did, and he and Cruger both had to leave for a while, as Gruumm had taken the opportune moment to launch an attack on the city. Boom appeared only to donate a few of his collection of Transformers for the kids to play with before vanishing, making the excuse that he was busy assisting Kat. Bridge couldn't really blame him for looking for a way out- his young teammates' powers made taking care of them a frightening prospect.
"MINE!" Syd shrieked when Jack went to grab the toy she'd been reaching for. In response, Jack made himself intangible and leaned through her, laughing out loud. Syd began to cry, which brought 3 Zs to her rescue... and they all collided with each other when they jumped at Jack, who let them pass right through him. This set all three to crying, and Bridge looked helplessly at the pile of kids, having no idea how to comfort them-
"It's alright," Sky said, his voice uncharacteristically gentle as he scooped up one Z, and the other two vanished. He gently rubbed and patted her back until she began to calm down. "Shhh... Jack's just being... Jack, and Syd's being what we call a 'brat'." Syd stopped her crying, pouted, and blew a raspberry at him before she absorbed the plastic from one of the toys and promptly swung at Jack, who didn't see this coming and got a fistful to the side of his face. He began to wail even louder than Z had been.
"Oh, man..." Bridge sighed, picking him up and, not knowing what else to do, imitated Sky. He then carefully rubbed the side of Jack's face. "Ow... that's gonna leave a mark, buddy." Jack sniffled before he threw his tiny arms around Bridge's head, smothering him. "Mmmph! Gerroff!" Jack stopped crying and giggled as he made his arms intangible, waving them back and forth through Bridge's head. "This is so creepy," Bridge told Sky, unable to hide a smile as he saw Sky gently set a now sleepy-looking Z in a beanbag chair.
"I don't know, I think... it's... kinda fun," Sky admitted sheepishly, shrugging when Bridge stared at him. "Here... you look tired, Bridge. I think you and Z both need a little nap... why don't you sit with her, and I'll take care of the others?" Bridge handed off Jack before settling into the beanbag right next to Z. She yawned softly and leaned against Bridge, closing her eyes and sucking her thumb. He watched as Sky continued to play with the other two, amazed that his boyfriend wasn't losing his cool- he never would have thought Sky would have the patience to deal with small children. He didn't even flinch when Syd ran up to the synthesizer and attempted to drag a chair under it so that she could climb up and play with the buttons.
"BAH!" she screeched, pounding the wall with her tiny fists when she found she was too short to climb into the chair. "BAAAAAH!"
"Brat," said Jack helpfully.
"No, you can't play with that," Sky told Syd, taking the chair out of her grip. "You might make it fill the room with milk or something."
"Milky!" Syd cooed, clapping her hands. Bridge merely shook his head, watching Sky attempting to make a sippy cup for her, then his eyelids began to droop when Sam finally arrived after the battle, saying he'd come to give them some backup. Z snuggled into his side...
When Bridge's eyes snapped open, the rec room was dark, and he could feel people on either side of him- Jack and Z, now their fully-grown adult selves again, were leaning against him, fast asleep. Giving a huge sigh of relief, Bridge got up as quietly as he could without disturbing the two from their slumber, pushing them closer together so that they leaned on each other. He could hear low voices coming from his and Sky's room, so he got up and walked toward it, hearing Sky and Sam conversing.
"-be great at it," Sam was saying. "Though I must say, I would never in a million years guess you'd actually want one." The two then fell silent when Bridge entered, rubbing his eyes and looking curiously from his boyfriend to the sparkling ball that was Sam.
"What were you guys talking about?" he yawned, drifting over to his dresser to get his pajamas out.
"Nothing," said Sky quickly. Bridge shot him a suspicious look, but Sky pretended not to notice, so he merely changed, crawling into bed alongside him. Sam began to float up to his usual corner, then hesitated.
"Ah... am I going to need to leave tonight?" he asked politely.
"No," said Bridge before Sky could speak up, closing his eyes again. "After taking care of three young children all day, I'm still exhausted. Thanks, though."
"Sure," said Sam, settling over the highest shelf in Bridge's half of the room. "Good night, you two."
"Night, Sam," said Sky, taking Bridge into his arms, and the two snuggled up together. Bridge glanced up at Sky, noticing that he had a faraway look in his eyes... the type of look he only got when he was longing for something, typically when he was thinking about his father.
"You OK?" he finally asked.
"Hmm?"
"You just look sad," Bridge replied, shifting so that the two were at eye level. Sky glanced around the room, as though he expected others to be listening in (Sam had gone very still and his light dulled a little, which the others guessed was his way of sleeping), then squirmed uncomfortably. "What's up? Tell me." Sky pursed his lips, then leaned his forehead against Bridge's, kissing him long and deeply. "Mmm," Bridge sighed upon returning it. "That was nice, but it still didn't tell me what's on your mind. Please tell me?" Sky closed his eyes, leaned back, and took a deep breath. When he next looked at Bridge, his expression was unlike his usual self- soft and gentle, his smile shy.
"...I want a baby, Bridge." Bridge gave Sky a puzzled look, fighting down laughter, as he wasn't sure if Sky was being sincere.
"... Come again?"
"I want a child. I know, I know, you're going to tell me it's not me and everything..."
"No, it's not," said Bridge, moving back down to bury his face in Sky's chest. "You can't be serious..."
"I am," said Sky firmly. "Not right now, or anything, of course... it's just... taking care of the others today... I really liked it. And it made me think about me and my dad, and how good that felt. My father died when I was so young, I never got the chance to fully appreciate him... I'd like to be a daddy someday, for a kid who wouldn't otherwise have one." Bridge sighed, moving back up to kiss Sky again. "I thought that out of the two of us, you would be the more enthusiastic one about having a child," he observed.
"I don't think I'd make a very good parent, honestly," Bridge admitted. "I also don't know about..." He raised one gloved hand. "Childrens' emotions are so much simpler than ours are, but kids constantly need to be handled and comforted and loved..." Sky nodded understandingly.
"I'm sure it'd never happen," he mumbled, now looking embarrassed. "But it's something I'd like... if I ever got the chance."
"You'd be an awesome daddy," Bridge smiled. "You'd raise another little Power Ranger just like you. And hey... if we're still together in five years, or ten... who's to say I wouldn't change my mind?" Sky gave his boyfriend a squeeze, nuzzling the top of his head.
"Thanks, Bridge. I love you."
"Love you, too," Bridge said quietly, finally closing his eyes and trying to picture what domestic bliss with Sky would be like... and as he drifted off, he finally had to concede that if he and Sky DID last that long, he could deal with a kid, if that was what made him happy.
