Passover Sedar anonymous April 1 2008, 22:01:10 UTC
I have attended Sedars and have several Jewish friends, but I am not myself Jewish. Please forgive any mistakes I may have made.

Bridge looked at the scene in front of him in amazement. There was a long table set up in the middle of the cadet common area. It was beautifully set with plates that Syd had graciously borrowed from her family. His squad was their in their finest clothes. He noted with bemusement that they all cleaned up nicely. The head of the table was empty and the group looked at him expectantly.

When Bridge had asked his friends to join him on Passover for a Sedar he had never expected it to be more than breaking some matzah and saying a prayer. With his family gone to visit relatives, Bridge wanted to mark the occasion in some small way. He was pleasantly surprised to discover the team wanted to help him observe the holiday properly.

Taking his place at the head of the table, Bridge began the Kiddush. His teammates filled each other’s cups according to custom and proceeded solemnly with Sedar. During the Magid the team took turns telling the Passover story from a special translation Jack had worked on beforehand. Bridge had offered to take care of it, but the others worried about the length of a Bridge-translation.

The Mah Nishtanah led to some good-natured teasing as they decided that Z was the youngest. She recited the four questions in truly horrific Hebrew and Bridge translated. There was more laughter and funny faces during the Maror. Jack was the only one who actually seemed to like the bitter herb.

Everyone lingered long after Bridge’s proclamation of "L'shanah haba'ah b'Yerushalayim! - Next year in Jerusalem!" There was talk of holidays past, family traditions, and future plans for celebration. There was grape juice instead of wine and a different kind of family, but Bridge thought it was the nicest Passover he’d ever spent.
