"You know," Rocky said lightly, steering Adam towards the bed, "next time a putty goes to hit you on the head, maybe you should duck."
Adam sighed and let Rocky have his way. "I would have if I'd seen it coming," he pointed out, but that was the thing that burned more than anything. He should have seen it coming, he was a highly trained ninja for crying out loud. He bet the rangers never made stupid mistakes like that.
"But of course," Rocky finished, tilting his head to the side as he checked for any outward signs of concussion, "you didn't see it coming."
"No."
And he should have. It was a stupid mistake to make and he couldn't afford to make mistakes like that now.
"Hey, c'mon, it's not the end of the world, Adam, everyone makes mistakes. I bet Tommy and Jason and the others make mistakes like that, too, it's just that nobody sees them do it."
"That's not reassuring."
"Well, it should be. Okay, name of our first grade teacher."
"What?"
"Answer the question."
"Mr. Evans, what--"
"How old were we when Aisha decided it would be a great idea to treasure hunting at the beach and we almost got stranded when the tide came in?"
"Ten. Rocky, there's nothing wrong with my memory."
"Just checking," Rocky replied easily. "Concussions can be nasty."
"I don't have a concussion."
"And now we're pretty sure you don't," Rocky agreed. "You might want to take some painkillers for that headache, though."
"Tell me something I don't know," Adam grumbled, wincing at the dull ache that was still throbbing mercilessly.
"I saw it coming."
Adam blinked. "Huh?"
"I saw the putty going for you," Rocky explained, perching on the edge of the bed just next to him. "I was just too slow. I'm sorry."
Adam bumped his friend's shoulder gently. "Hey, weren't you the one who just said everyone makes mistakes? I'm okay."
"Yeah, this time."
Adam was about to say something, although what, exactly, he had no idea, but then Rocky gave him a cheerful grin and bounced back to his feet. "I'm to call Aisha, make sure she got home okay. You take those painkillers, alright? Don't make me force them down you."
Adam threw a pillow after him, grinning at the aggrieved 'hey!' when it found its target. At least his aim was still good, despite the head injury.
