Sky fed his code into the drinks machine and his soda resolutely failed to materialise.

He sighed, rested his forehead against the cool metal of the front of the machine, and managed not to scream in irritation. It had been SUCH a crappy day.

Being Sky, he itemised everything that had happened to him.

1. He didn't know anyone.
1. a. This wouldn't been so bad if people had been nice to him.
1. b. Even just 'not laughing at him' when he'd automatically apologised to the water cooler for bumping into it when he'd been walking along reading, even that would've been nice.
1. b. i. He'd hurt his hip when he'd walked into the water cooler.
1. b. ii. It was really unnecessary for one of the other cadets to then ask him if he was trying a new dance.

2. a. He missed his family.
2. b. Even the dog, Ruffles. He knew he was going crazy because Ruffles usually annoyed him.

3. His new roommate was kind of grumpy.

4. None of the other cadets here seemed to have the right respect for the rules.
4. a. One of them had even asked him where he shopped to get the stick up his butt, and if it'd hurt to put it there.
4. b. He'd started to answer, thinking it was a serious question.

So, all in all, today SUCKED, and now all Sky wanted was his stupid soda, and it wasn't coming out.

He tried his code again. The machine beeped, indicating that it had taken the money from his account -- at least, that's what he thought it indicated. It wasn't like the drink machines back home. He pressed the button for his caffeine-free diet vanilla soda again, with a hopeful semi-smile on his face...

...and it continued to fail to materialise.

He sighed.

Loudly.

"You need a hand?"

Sky spun, rubbing his hand over his face. How embarrassing. How very, very... oh. It was his roommate. "No, I'm okay, thanks," he said, trying to smile.

His roommate looked less grumpy than before. Or was it his imagination? He was smiling, with the dots around his eyes crinkling a little. "I'm Dru. Sorry about before. I just didn't realise I was getting a roommate so early."

Sky nodded, moving automatically into an at ease stance. "That's okay. I got here early. I like to be prepared."

Dru leaned on the red brick wall, folded his arms, and said with one eyebrow quirked, "You ever relax?"

Sky looked down at himself. His uniform was neatly ironed, not a rumple to be seen, and his hair was immaculate. Shoes were shiny. He looked at Dru. Neat enough, but definitely rumpled. Wrinkly. And... Sky hesitated to even think it... slouching.

But it was kind of endearing. "Not much," he said, allowing himself a little self-deprecating humour. "Especially when the machines hate me."

Dru got up and ambled over towards him, his bare feet thwacking softly against the linoleum. "You just have to know how to treat it right." He put one hand on the front of the machine, tapped it with his other, on the left side of it, then counted to three and kicked it, hard.

Sky began to scoff. "Oh, surely that won't..."

His soda appeared in the slot. Sky blinked. "Hey, thanks." He took it out. Another one appeared. Sky took that one, too. "I guess I did pay twice. You're good."

Dru folded his arms again, looking self-satisfied. "You're welcome."

Another soda appeared. Dru took it.

Then another.

And another.

And another.

Sky's arms were getting full. "Back to our room?" he asked tentatively.

"You bet," Dru said, failing to catch a can that toppled from the top of his pile. "Before anyone else comes out!"

They ran off together at a stagger, trying to keep a hold of the cans.
