There was a knock on her door, late at night. Trip, clutching a pillow to himself like it was a bulletproof vest. "Come in," she said sleepily, patting the bed next to her.
He sat down, fidgeted, then said, "Wes asked me to kill him."
"Oh, Trip." She took him in her arms and let him cry.
* * *
After 6 months it became obvious that Wes was never going to get back to himself. Never.
She found him after he'd tried to overdose.
Stopped him when he had been in the bathroom too long with a sharp knife.
Had to take the power cells out of all the weaponry and hide them.
There was no counselling. No drugs that could help. She tried explaining the situation to medical professionals but she nearly got locked up herself.
He looked at her one day, and said, "Please."
That was all. But she knew what she had to do.

She was sitting in her window, looking out, when she felt Trip behind her. "You did it?" he said flatly.
"Yeah," she said, without turning. "I had to. He needed me to."
"Good," he said in a small voice. He patted her on the leg then scurried away.
She didn't say, I did it so you wouldn't have to, but she knew he knew it anyway.
