Summary: Bridge and Jack try to get Sky to relax and have some fun while sorting clothing.
Disclaimer/Author's Notes/Spoiler Warning: Post end-of-series, so spoilers for the whole series. I'm proud of this one, as I thought this was the prompt I'd have the most trouble with.
One of the disadvantages to collecting clothing donations for the homeless of Newtech City was that a lot of odd things often turned up. Sky and Bridge found this out very quickly when they had half a day off and decided to spend some of it helping Jack, Ally and Piggy sort through the donations that came into their business.
"Look," said Bridge, grinning when he found a purple sombrero and held it up. "Wonder who'd ever want to wear this thing?"
"You'd be surprised," said Jack, setting down a few boxes of unsorted things onto the loading dock next to them. "No matter how loud, ugly, tacky or out-of-style something is, chances are there's someone around who will think it's attractive and be happy to take it off our hands." Sky rolled his eyes and shook his head when Bridge stuck the sombrero on his head, though Jack snickered. "Purple looks good on you, buddy."
"Now we have to find something for you," said Bridge, prodding Sky in the side, earning him a glare in response. "Oh, have a little fun, will you?"
"I can have fun without looking stupid," Sky replied, but his friends paid him no heed, Jack even jumping into the truck they'd been loading to find something, and emerging wearing a floppy yellow sun hat.
"I should save this for Z," he said as Bridge nearly fell over with laughter. "OK, Sky, now it's your turn."
"No, thanks," said Sky, which only got him another nudge from Bridge. He sighed heavily, heaving himself up onto the truck. "Alright, if it'll get the two of you off my back and concentrating on what we're doing again..."
"That's the spirit," said Bridge. He and Jack watched as Sky prowled among the clothing donations, finally selecting a cowboy hat with Newtech University's logo on the front and plopping it on his head.
"There, are you happy now?" he asked grumpily, hopping back down, and his friends gave each other high-fives.
"Yes, we are. You need to let loose and be silly more often," Bridge informed him, and before Sky could react, he'd swapped the purple sombrero for the cowboy hat, and he and Jack both burst out laughing.
"Oh, for the love of," Sky groused, before catching a glimpse of himself in one of the truck's mirrors. "I look completely ridiculous!"
"So do we," Jack pointed out.
"That's what makes it fun," said Bridge, throwing his arm around Sky and giving his reflection the thumbs-up. Sky took a good, long look at himself before he finally cracked a smile. "There you go," said Bridge. "It gets easier every time, doesn't it?"
"Stuff it," Sky muttered, but he kept his smile for the rest of the day, not even shedding the stupid hat until he and Bridge had to leave. The two were silent as they walked back to the Delta Base, the setting summer sun warming them. They unconsciously moved closer and closer while they did so, their fingers brushing together, briefly intertwining at one point. Their survival of Gruumm's invasion had driven the two closer together than they'd been before, and something more than friendship might have been there, though Bridge wasn't sure yet.
"You should smile more often," he finally told Sky, knowing this was probably safe to say, that it wouldn't offend him. "It looks good on you."
"...I know," said Sky, looking over at him before he suddenly, unexpectedly grabbed Bridge's hand, squeezed it tightly.
"Awww, are you blushing?" he replied quietly.
"No, I'm not. The sun's setting, you dork. Everything's red."
"If you say so," said Bridge. However, he noticed that Sky didn't let go of his hand until they'd reached the entrance of the Delta Base, either.
Maybe they should try on stupid hats more often.
