The Trails and Tribulations of Teaching a Parent to Facebook

Apr 11, 2010 23:24

I don't know about you, but my parents aren't exactly pros when it comes to computers, which is not to say that they are computer illiterate, or to say that I am a complete whiz kid when it comes to computers(and the internet), but they could be better, or worse, up to this point I'm not really sure which.
In my household, the Internet(and computers exists for various reasons:
Mum: Checking lottery results(She's very insistent and pushy whenever draw time nears)
Dad: I have no idea actually, he primarily uses it to check his email with Microsoft outlook, ocasionally for MSN and facebook(this is where I get my headaches and hoarse voices)

When dad told me that he was going to join facebook, my face was an exact replica of the Scream. Seriously. Why? Because, "My friends are asking me to." I swear 90% of 'what's this for?' questions stem from this sentence. Most of the time he doesn't know what the stuff is for. Then there was the fear of him wanting to add me on facebook, which is not bad, really, but it would be awkward, when I let him add me on MSN, I had to bear with the hail of non-stop winks and nudges, thank goodness he never got into emoticons.

So, after he signed up, (truthfully I signed him up, all he provided was an email to use, I even provided the password, which to this day he has problems remembering, but then again it happens to most of his passwords and most of mine so can't blame him there, like father like daughter no? Or as the Chinese say,'有其父必有其子') And after that he explored facebook a bit and added friends and stuff.

I'd expected him to forget about facebook in a few weeks. I was wrong.  Once I had to teach him about facebook chat. And yesterday my brother and I had to teach him how to upload photos up to facebook. Again. After that, I voluntarily taught him to tag photos and write captions. No idea what got into me. My brother whisper-yelled at me for that.

All in all, it wasn't so bad, if you could live through the following that is:
Me:Click the tag button. *dad clicks photo* no not the photo, it'll go the the next photo that way. Okay click the tag button and click the photo. *dad clicks photo again* NO. click the tag button first.
He eventually got it. After two hours he successfully uploaded 6 photos and tagged one, not sure if he mistagged, though.

I suppose my dad isn't very accustomed to these things. So I try to be patient. I just end up running out halfway.

Anyway, I update because sometimes people like to read what I write. Though I rarely receive comments, but hey, I'd like to think I'm funny, and if I'm funny enough to make you laugh, just a bit, that's good enough for me. =D

P.S. I like Cobra Starship and PostSecret. Yes they're two different things.XD
