UMC: Mumbleman.
I was so excited to tell people I was training for my first 5k run. My first triathlon. My first marathon. Hell, even Ironman is in the common parlance sufficiently at this point that you can tell a random person you're training for an Ironman, and they'll know roughly what that is and be excited for you, even if they don't "get it".
I have found the line.
Stranger: Hey, I see you out here a lot. What're you training for?
Me: Ultraman Canada!
Stranger: Ultrawhat? What is that?
Me: It's .. basically just over the distance of two Ironmans, but spread out over 3 days.
Stranger: [blank stare]
Me: It's fun. Probably.
Stranger: [backs away slowly]
So now when people ask what I'm training for, I say, "Oh, a longish triathlon thing..", eyes shifting warily. And if they ask for more details, or for the name, I kinda cough and say, "*Mumble*man," and then I hear my mom calling and run away.
I think I'm going to start telling people I'm training for a 5k run. It's just easier for everyone.
