Little Henry still looked in awe at the many, many people on the streets even after being in Korea for a week already. A week! That was a very long time in Henry’s book. He shuffled behind his mother, holding her hands and looked at all the people. It was almost like back home in Toronto, how there were so many people out on the streets. They weren’t that different to Henry, just that it was a whole different feeling to it. It was also very confusing to Henry as they all spoke a whole different language than him. Henry only knew English and only some of what his parents speak. Henry remembers how his parents tried to teach him Korean but it was all so confusing so he didn’t speak much.
Oh, look at that.
Henry’s hand in his mother’s hand loosened a bit when he saw puppies and kittens behind the glass window. He stood in place to stare at the yipping puppies and mewing kittens. He felt his mother’s tug and heard her telling him to go but the little animals, especially the little puppy with big brown eyes and golden fur that stared back at him was calling to him.
He must have that puppy.
Even if he gets all sneeze-y around the puppies and kittens. His mother told him he was allergic or something.
“Henry,” His mother said, “Come on. Let’s go, we’re going to eat. Didn’t you say you were hungry?”
Huh, eat? Eat means food.
Henry turned away from the puppy without a second thought and tightened his grip, following her with shuffling steps. He was getting pretty hungry and his small hand patted his stomach, trying to make the growling sound go away. But of course, it doesn’t. Henry sighed. He hoped they would find a place soon.
“Here we go,” His mother smiled down at Henry, helping him up the abnormally large stairs Henry every seen. “Now take a big step, so you don’t trip-”
He tripped, falling to his knees before his mother could stop him. He was too busy staring at the big stairs to properly pay attention to what was in front of him, even if his mother did warn him.
Henry frowned and pouted as he got up when he heard his other brother sniggered behind him with their father.
“Henry’s clumsiness must have gotten from you,” His father said, trying to stop laughing.
“Oh shush you, dear.” His mother said as she picked Henry up swiftly under the arms and up the few large stairs to get into the slightly busy restaurant.
As they waited to be seated at the waiting area, Henry stood on the chair and looked around to see what people were eating. He saw a table that had yet to order in front of him and in a moment, they called the waitress. Henry attentively watched them order what they wanted. The waitress repeated for confirmation before leaving to place the order. After about a fifteen minute waiting, he watch in awe as he sees the plates of food that keeps coming out.
Henry’s mouth slightly watered at the sight and hoped they’ll call on them soon.
Once the family was called and then seated, Henry sat at the kid’s lift up chair with his two small-clenched fist on the table with a determined face (or what he thinks is determined anyways).
“Henry,” His mother called gently to get his attention when the waitress came to get their order. His mother held up a menu with pictures for Henry to see. “What do you want to eat?”
Henry opened his mouth to say what he wanted, surprising his family and the waitress. He hoped he repeated what the table he watched ordered right, not noticing his parents and brother conversing rapidly in front of him. When the waitress repeated the order on automatic with wide eyes, Henry listened very carefully. The order sounded about the same as the table and nodded with satisfaction.
“How was that possible!” His brother said with wide eyes.
“Did you teach him that?” His father asked his mother who shook her head fast.
“I did not!” His mother said, eyes wide in wonder. “I wonder where he learned that…”
Henry all but ignored everything, just waiting for the food he saw earlier to come out. When it did, Henry grinned, clapped, and his chubby cheeks became more prominent than before.
“Oh my,” Henry’s mother looked at the table filling up with amusement. “He ordered alcohol for you dear.”
“Our Henry is pretty smart, eh?” Henry’s father praised with a big smile while his brother rolled his eyes before digging in.
Ignoring what his family was talking about, he focused on the thing in front of him. All Henry cared about was getting that shrimp in his tiny hands and in his tummy.
