King - Chapter 02

“Aw man…” Donghae muttered when he saw a young boy wrapped in a tattered brown cloak and worn-out leather shoes that’s barely holding together, fainted at the side of the road. To Donghae, it seemed like the boy was barely breathing, probably dehydrated and starved from traveling.
Although Donghae was out traveling in the forest a bit away from his village to hunt for the dove to become King after breakfast, surrounding the village was only the forest on one side and the sea on the other, the nearest town was more than a week’s traveling and that’s by transportation. It would have been tripled that length if by walking and seeing the poor boy, Donghae was sure that’s what he did, without any food or water. Donghae guessed the boy didn’t bring any food or water, at least not enough for the journey to wherever the boy was headed.
“And Kibum told me not to pick up any strays just this morning too…” Bending down, he took hold of the boy and picked him up in his arms and his back. Once Donghae secured the boy on his back, he started walking back to his village. Donghae sighed, “He’s going to kill me…Maybe Eunhyuk will see the boy first and convince Kibum to not get angry.”
It didn’t take Donghae that long to walk through the forest and back to his village. There were still a few hours left before dinner needs to be cooked. When he walked in his village, whoever saw him sighed or laughed and asked if it was another stray, something Donghae always brings back whenever he goes out. It ranged from small animals to big ones to those who were human or other beings. You could always count on him to bring someone in need or injured back to help.
When Donghae reached his home, he timidly opened the door quietly and peeked in to see if Kibum was anywhere in sight. Once he didn’t see anyone, he quickly got in and shut the door quietly behind him, just in case his housemate were anywhere in the house. Quickly, Donghae headed straight to the guest room to put him down.
As soon as the boy was tucked in comfortably, he couldn’t help but stand there for a moment debating with himself before quickly pinching the poor defenseless boy’s chubby cheeks, leaving a spread of pink on the spots he squished. Once he poked and prodded, Donghae quickly went to get the needed supplies to help the stranger.
Going to the kitchen, Donghae quickly gathered water and towels and walked back while stopping by the medicine cabinet, he took the necessary supplies he needed. Closing the door, he turned to walk to the guest room, only to nearly dropping everything in surprise when he saw Eunhyuk looking at him with a raised eyebrow in front of the guest room.
“And what do you think you’re doing with those?” Eunhyuk asked with his arms crossed.
“Um…” Donghae started with a hopeful look, “Would you believe me if I say I found an alien and needed to do some test on it?”
“So you found another stray,” Eunhyuk stated, looking at what Donghae was holding. “A human if judging from what you’re holding, possibly starved and dehydrated from a long journey and passed out in the forest when you found him and brought him back to treat him. All the while hoping Kibum won’t catch you and hope I’ll be the one who find out first to convince Kibum it was the right thing to do. Right?”
“…How did he know?” Donghae muttered with a frown.
“I know,” Eunhyuk stressed out to let Donghae he had heard, “I know because I known you for a long time, Kibum even more so. So who did you find this time?”
Donghae lit up happily like an excited puppy knowing Eunhyuk would help him, “I found the cutest boy in the forest! His cheeks are so chubby and squishy! He’s probably born in the beginning or a bit later in the Fourth Age! He seems so young!”
Eunhyuk chuckled at his friend while the two walked inside the guestroom. When they walked in, Donghae quickly noticed the boy was stirring and hurried over to his side to give him the necessary things to make him feel better. His special mix of medicine always gives his patients the small kick to wake them up and be better very soon.
Eunhyuk stopped short when he neared and saw the boy wake up with a start and shot straight up despite being starved and had nonexistent energy.
“Holy mother of-” The boy cried out wanting to spit out whatever went down his throat. “What the-what was that?!”
“Medicine,” Donghae proudly said, happiness shining in his eyes that his special mix of medicine has worked once again without fail. “My own mix.”
“That wasn’t medicine!” The boy said with disbelief, only this time with less vigor than before, the effects already wearing off. “That was some-”
“Hen-Henry?” Eunhyuk said questioningly, not quite believing his eyes.
“Huh?” The boy named Henry looked up to see who was it that knew his name, after all he traveled a long way from home. When he saw a slender young looking man with soft light brown hair framing his face, he widened his eyes in surprised. “Hyukjae?”
Eunhyuk smiled brightly and quickly neared the boy while reaching out to hug him with Henry smiling with accepting an arm. Both of them shared a brief but intimate hug that quickly put the happy Donghae’s smile into a frown and eyes narrowed at the two.
“Hey, hey!” Donghae called out to the two, “Eunhyuk! He’s weak from traveling, no manhandling. He needs food, go get him some while I give him his medicine.”
Eunhyuk laughed while nodding, “Sorry about that, Donghae.” Turning to Henry with a bright smile, he asked, “We have leftovers from lunch, so I’ll just bring it that up for you. Luckily for you, if you still like it that is, it’s bread with honey and Erchien Soup.”
“Really?” Henry asked with a small smile, the medicine wearing off already. “Lucky, lucky.”
“You always were lucky,” Eunhyuk walked towards the door as he commented, causing Henry to smile. “I would give you more but you need to start with something light. When dinner comes, we’ll get you a more filling meal. I’ll leave Donghae to take care of you now. He’s really good at taking care of animals he always picks up from outside.”
“I don’t always pick up animals!” Donghae pouted before shaking his head, “Besides your friend Henry is not an animal, he’s human.”
“Sorry,” Eunhyuk laughed lightly from the doorway, “You picked up so many of them, they’re all becoming the same to me. Anyways, I need to get him food, patch Henry up nicely. Seems like his left arm is injured, usually he’d use both arms to hug me.” With that said, he closed the door behind him.
“Huh?” Donghae blinked at the closed door before turning around abruptly that surprise Henry and quickly checked the boy’s left arm like Eunhyuk said. He found a messily bandaged arm wrapped around his upper arm tainted with dried blood and dirt. Eyes wide, Donghae quickly got up to go get other supplies he needed for the injury from the medicine cabinet.
Henry blinked at the older looking man zipped out of the room and back in a moment with arms of bandages and other stuff he needed. The next thing Henry knew, he was yelping and screaming in pain when Donghae applied disinfection on his unwrapped wound.
“Almost done,” Donghae said applying some more disinfectant. “I just need to make sure your wound is clean, don’t want it to get infected.”
Henry winced at the pressured being applied near the center of his wound and soon it Donghae finished cleaning his wound and wrapping his arm with fresh bandages.
“There,” Donghae smiled, “All done. Now drink these, it’ll give you back your strength and other things you need to become healthier again.”
“Thanks,” Henry said dryly while taking the offered medicine a bit hesitantly. He looked at it for a moment before drinking it. He winced and gulped the rest down hastily. “Ugh,” Henry gasped, “What is this?”
“Medicine,” Donghae said with a bright smile that Henry swears it held spitefulness towards him. “Some of this and that I’ve just gotten to mixed after Eunhyuk says you were hurt too. Now, lie back down and get some rest before Eunhyuk comes back up with the food.”
Henry nodded and slumps back down into the soft pillows and covers. He closed his eyes and drifted off.
The next time he woke was by the gentle probing and he saw Eunhyuk smiling gently down at him.
“Come on,” Eunhyuk said softly and helps him up against the pillows. “Let’s get something in you first.” And so Eunhyuk feeds Henry who was barely staying awake to eat the food. “Just a bit more and you can go back to sleep.”
Henry just mumbled and tried to eat whatever was left before Eunhyuk set down the empty bowl to help Henry back down to sleep, going off to dreamland the moment his head touched the pillow.
