I had lunch today with the editor of the Chicon Restaurant Guide and four of her staff. I would not be the one to ask to write a review of the dining establishment at which we ate.
As the busboy was filling the first glass, it was mentioned to him that one of us was in a hurry. He walked away from the table to inform the waiter. The busboy then went off in one direction and the waiter in another. One of my dining companions got up to grab a water pitcher to fill the rest of our glasses, After filling three additional glasses, a busboy came by, took the pitcher from her hand, and placed it on the table next to us before going to serve coffee at another table. One of my companions without water went to grab the pitcher off the table right behind her, but before she could, another busboy picked it up and took if in another direction.
It couldn't have been choreographed better by Charles Chaplin (eventually we all did get water, although the drinks order was messed up, one of the meals came significantly after the others, and was incorrect when it arrived, and you wouldn't expect it to be so difficult to get butter).
