'My shadow's the only one that walks beside me' - Green Day

Ok kids. Today we will look at the significance of your shadow.

Well... actually all I have right now is more of an observation.

Above I have a quote from Green Day's 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' and this one line just hit me funny. It hits me funny because of how people refer to their shadow. It's a companion. But in some cases it's not a wanted companion. It's something that reminds us of our past and/or something that is haunting us.

Here is the definition of a shadow: Shadow Definition

The parts that stick out to me are:

1.) A feeling or cause of gloom or unhappiness: The argument cast a shadow on their friendship.
2.) (a) A nearby or adjoining region; vicinity: grew up in the shadow of the ballpark.
(b) A dominating presence or influence: spent years working in the shadow of the lab director.
3.) (a) A darkened area of skin under the eye. Often used in the plural.
(b) An incipient growth of beard that makes the skin look darker.

I include the third one due to what symbolism a darkened face means.

Other meanings:
  • A phantom; a ghost
  • An imperfect imitation or copy

  • Tool's 'Forty-Six & 2' refers to a shadow as well. Actually the way the lyrics go with that one are pretty interesting as well. First line in the lyrics:
'My shadow's Shedding skin and I've been picking scabs again.'

    ...and the end...
'See my shadow changing, stretching up and over me soften this old armor.
hoping I can clear the way by stepping through my shadow, coming out the other side.
Step into the shadow. Forty six and two are just ahead of me.'

Now the symbolism in these songs are pretty easy to grasp. You have a general feeling of what their shadow is and what they are referring to. Now let me throw one last thing in here: What is a moon shadow?

    Cat Stevens - Moonshadow
'I'm being followed by a moon shadow
    Moon shadow moon shadow
Leaping and hopping on a moon shadow
    Moon shadow moon shadow'
