Chapter 34:
Changmin threw the main door open and strolled in, throwing his bag on to the couch.
“I’m home!”
Jaejoong glanced up from his magazine and smiled uncomfortably.
“Welcome home.”
“Where’s Yoochun?”
The older one closed the magazine and placed it on the coffee table with a resounding sigh.
“He left a few minutes after the two of you did. He seemed pretty pissed off…did you say something to him?”
Dong-Wook nudged Changmin and gave him an “I told you so” look. The taller boy just huffed and pushed the other’s elbow away.
“I just told him I was taking Dong-Wook out for a drink. “
“Alone? Right after Wook called you his boyfriend? My, my, aren’t you intelligent…”
“Seriously? What’s wrong with a little bit of jealousy in a relationship? It keeps things passionate, right?”
Jaejoong frowned disapprovingly and shook his head.
“Or, little bro, it could lead to unfortunate misunderstandings that could possibly ruin your relationship with a special someone forever.”
“Can we seriously not talk about this right now…? I’m not in the mood.”
“What happened?”
“I have to go back to the University in two days.”
Jaejoong froze. He stared at Changmin for a long while before leaning back slowly against the couch.
“And does Yoochun know about this little fact?”
“No.”
“Do you intend to tell him, Dongsaeng? Or would you like to wait until you’re boarding the next flight out to do it? It would make things so much more…passionate…don’t you think?... I don’t know what kind of stunt you’re trying to pull, Min, but if you hurt my best friend…whether you’re my brother or not…I am GOING to destroy you, understand?”
Changmin's eyes widened in shock before he sneered back at his brother in frustration.
“I don’t need you judging me, Hyung. Wait for me to try and explain my situation before jumping to your own dramatic conclusions, alright? Can you do that? Or is your fucking pea sized brain incapable of comprehending what I just said?”
Jaejoong shot off of the couch and grabbed Changmin by his collar.
“DON’T YOU DARE TALK TO ME LIKE THAT!”
“THEN.STOP.FUCKING.JUDGING.ME!”
“Grow Up, Changmin!”
“I think you’re the one that needs to grow up, Princess.”
“What the fuck does that mean?”
“Talk to me when YOU have to make life altering choices, Hyung. Because all I can see right now is a little free bird that gets to do whatever he pleases because he denies all sense of responsibility.”
Jaejoong let go of Changmin and took a step back in shock.
“Come again?”
“Do you know, Hyung, what it means to have to choose between two dreams? Do you know how lucky you are that your dreams are so fucking flexible that you can fly away with Yunho and still follow your chosen career path?”
“What the fuck, Changmin?”
Dong-Wook put a hand on Changmin’s chest and shoved him back.
“Cool off. I know you’re upset and that you can’t think right now but you need to relax or you’re going to end up saying things you don’t mean.”
“Whatever.”
Changmin bared his teeth at his brother before running a hand through his hair, He turned his back on them and ran up the steps to his room.
The two people downstairs flinched when they heard the bedroom door slam shut, and let out simultaneous sighs of exasperation.
Jaejoong turned towards Dong-Wook and lifted a delicate eyebrow in question.
“Well?”
“You see…”
They talked for what seemed like hours before Jaejoong sat back onto the sofa with a defeated expression on his face. He put a hand over his eyes and groaned miserably.
“Six years…I don’t know what to say…I just thought he was playing games again. You should have seen Yoochun’s expression when he left, he looked so upset and angry. I wanted to strangle my own brother for putting that look on his face, but…”
“…”
“You know, sometimes I think that this is my entire fault…and I know that some part of him blames me for a lot of things in his life.”
“He loves you, Jaejoong-hyung. It’s only human tendency to get envious of the people around you. He doesn’t hate you or resent you…he’s just frustrated...”
“Why is it that everyone else seems to know my brother more than I do?”
“No one knows him better than you do. The only thing is…you keep treating him like the little boy he was three years ago. He’s old enough to make his own decisions. He knows what he’s doing.”
Jaejoong smiled.
“You’re a good guy, Dong-Wook. I would have approved of you if my brother wasn't already head over heels in love with my best friend.”
He didn’t notice the younger boy flinch at his words.
“I’m going to call Yoochun over. They need to sort this shit out…whatever it is. Go up and talk to him until then and see if you can calm him down enough for a civilized conversation.”
“Alright.”
Jaejoong grinned at him and reached for his phone.
Dong-Wook ran up the stairs and knocked on Changmin’s door.
It wasn’t until much later that night that two hearts shattered into uncountable pieces.
It wasn’t until that point that one person had lost a chance and another had gained it.
There were two lessons learned that night.
One was that a person never seemed to learn from their past experiences until it was too damn late to act on them.
And the second was that no matter how much you love a person...you always seem to love yourself a little bit more.
