Weeks later, I'm still reeling from it. And not at all impressed with RTD's smugness about fans not respecting his artistic vision. I don't need a happy ending, necessarily, but I like a glimmer of hope. What bothered me about CoE was that -- apart from Gwen & Rhys' unborn child -- there was none. The things that made Jack human were all destroyed. If the point was to break Jack utterly, then RTD succeeded. But watching such a broken character in the future -- yeah, I'm not that interested. (But chances are he'll be all recovered next time we see him, just like he was after Tosh and Owen died

Yes, cinzia was talking about what a jerk RTD has been to the fans. It's like he thinks it's funny that he's destroyed all that fans love. Maybe it's all about the power with him. When I write, I do it for myself, but I also do it because I enjoy entertaining people and making them happy. I wouldn't take it likely to devastate the fans of my work

I'm not going to lie, I didn't watch for the compelling stories or terrific writing. Torchwood had more plotholes then swiss cheese, but I happily considered that part of its cheesy charm. Until Ianto died.
I watched for Jack and Ianto, their burgeoning relationship. It was ruined before it was even given a chance.
I don't buy that Ianto 'had' to die. I call BS. It seems like a cheap way to get the 'drama' that a lot of people seem to enjoy. I don't understand that. If I want to be gutted and depressed, I'll turn on CNN. If that makes me shallow or a bubblehead, so be it.
For me, Torchwood died when Ianto did. Destroying Jack was just the crap icing on the shit cake that was Children of Earth.
Hope I don't sound too crazy, I'm still pretty bitter about the whole thing.
Yes, Torchwood has always been guilty pleasure material. I loved Captain Jack with a passion, and to have a mainstream bisexual character on TV was just jaw-droppingly awesome. Not to mention he's hot. *G* And like the original Star Trek that was often corny with low-budget scenery, you watched it because the characters were so much fun. And Torchwood was like that--the banter and the nuttiness and the sexy stuff

You know, I'm such a dork, I haven't watched Merlin yet. I missed the first couple episodes without even realizing it, and then kept meaning to get caught up--and now I've missed it entirely. Gah. I got side-tracked by Torchwood downloads. :P
TW has always been rather uneven IMHO, some very weak points, some very strong. I didn't personally have a "thing" for Ianto and his death didn't upset me vastly - except in the sense that we'd only just killed off Tosh and Owen, so the core team is pretty decimated. I was, however, very disturbed by the death/sacrifice/murder of Jack's grandson, Steven, on all sorts of levels - not least because that choice makes a mockery of what ianto died for, the whole idea that you can'tplay the numbers game; a hurt to one is a hurt to all etc. Sacrificing a smaller number, whether it's 10% or one small Steven, was a principle that they were supposed to be fighting against. but by then, of course, Jack had been written into a corner. When Ianto was still making a brave stand and Jack was talking about angry humans in defence of their own, I kept wondering But What can they do? How would they fight? But hey, you'll always have plot holes in showslike TW and that's ok, I can buy a plot hole or three, but yeah, they seemed to change the

Yes, Torchwood has been very uneven, and quite crappy in some spots...heh. Captain Jack is pretty much what keeps me coming back. I liked Gwen in the beginning, but they tend to make her too freakin' overwrought, and if it were a lesser actress I'd probably hate her by now
