Oh, I know what you mean about getting attached! I have several hundred icons stored on my computer, and I switch them up every few weeks, but there are some I just can't bear to cycle out. :-/ I'm a total wuss. I can't help but save all the great new icons I find (I've friended several icon comms) and I have dozens I know I will NEVER use, but I just have to have the pretty there on my hard drive JUST IN CASE! And then I start feeling guilty and if I haven't been using an icon much I wind up deleting it from LJ and just keep it in my vault, and this allows me to put some new ones on my account. Plus I have 3 LJ journals as well as a MySpace, Gather, and InsaneJournal, so I can spread the love around that way. ;)
I tend to go for icons that use text, and I match them with the topic of my posts when I can. I tried random icon selection but that can lead to some unfortunate situations, like a LOL icon when you're posting comments to someone whose had a death in the family, or a JOY icon when commenting to someone depressed. :O But since most of the stuff I write is either happy/laughing or WTF-inducing, I have a lot of those.
LOL! I am the same! I have a bunch of icons on my harddrive, too, some never used. But I had to have them! I go through phases, too, so I try to wedge in icons for new movies and such but then I have to give up on something else. The Orli ones are the toughest to get rid of, and of course I'm all nostalgic about older ones 'cause I remember the LJ times from when I used them. I'm such a sap...heh.
And I specifically made a couple of "scenery" type icons just because of those times--like you said--when someone made a serious post and all I had was "Beg for It" type icons that were reallllly inappropriate...heh.
I tend to like to use icons according to who the post is about or who I know the other person likes. So the Sean/Orli/Vig icons get used a LOT, while say this Ewan one doesn't get as much play. :P
I've only got GI Jane on VHS. And now you're making me want to watch it. Those legs of his! AUGH! I even get used to the moustache after awhile...hee!
He was heart-stoppingly gorgeous in 28 days but he's not in it enough! Dammit...I'm in the middle of Two Towers and now you're making me want to go get 28 days! 'Cause I love Sandra too! And Alan Tudyk! ARgh!
