It really was one of THE best films I saw last year. I loved, more than anything, that there was no solution, that it was very much an 'in the moment' movie & nothing really changed. And I loved that you can make up your own idea about what happened in the ending.

I think that's what surprised me the most...I kept waiting for it to hit a more conventional stride, to give us what we were hoping/expecting, and it just wasn't like that. It was what made it even more real, like you say, it was just like being carried along in this moment in time.

I think how one interprets the end says a lot about what one thinks of the state/future of humanity.

Thanks for your powerful review. This film is definitely on my list for this year.

It's one of those films where you're not sure how you even feel about it when it's over, and then for days after you just can't get it out of your head. The Clearing, with Robert Redford, Willem Dafoe, and Helen Mirren was like that. Not a movie I felt I could recommend, it was so chilling, but it was so powerful it just stuck with me.

Interesting. I agree with you about Clive, he lent that same vibe in Sin City.

After thinking about it, I realize the thing about Clive, too is the way he can make his characters seem so utterly down-to-earth. Even in the Bourne Identity, he was sort of this stock assassin character and with a few lines you suddenly had all this empathy for him and he became a tragic figure that hit you right in the heart. Here in this movie he would be considered the "hero" but he's the sort of hero you can picture appearing in your own life. He never comes across as superhuman or over-the-top--he's just a regular guy in this extraordinary circumstance.

The Entertainment Weekly review of CoM said, "...no one dedicates his good looks to the service of brutish characters better than Owen..."

I saw it yesterday and was just blown away, to the point that I wrote an actual quite lengthy post about it. I don't mean to beg, but please go read and comment if you're so inclined, because you can get all spoilery in the comments if you want, and I'd love to hear more of your thoughts.

I've come down with a terrible cold so I'm a bit fuzzy at the moment but I will add some thoughts to yours as soon as I can order them somewhat. :P

I'm not even sure I *like* movies like this...heh...I'm sensitive to films anyway, and get really involved...and one like this just gets inside me and won't go away. Gah.

*nibbles your Clive icon*

Damn it, I knew I was going to have to see this movie. I read the premis and was totally hooked but since you said it got you thinking I will definately move it up on my list.

It's a weird one because I was kind of disoriented throughout...you feel sort of distanced, and then desolate and then scared and then suddenly it's all over and you're just sitting there in the dark going "What just hit me?" Which is all part of the plan, apparently, because I haven't been able to stop thinking about it or reliving scenes from it since.
