My costume says I'm a whore...

So, I read this article on MSN the other day, entitled "What her costume says about her." It was this cheesy sort of "let's throw together something for our deadline" type of article, where they named a few costumes, got a regular guy to say something about it, then an "expert" conjectured what it meant.

Basically harmless kind of stuff, I thought. But then I got realllly peeved. They named a popular "sexy angel" costume, which quite frankly I'm not familiar with, but anyway...the consensus was that if your girlfriend wore this to a party it meant she was an insecure attention-seeker and was probably cheating on you--or would soon.

I was fuming all day, thinking how this is typical--a woman dresses up sexy and right away we make some negative judgement about her. And my favorite--once you're with someone, it's time to put on the nun costume, literally and figuratively. *clenches fists*

Then later that day, w/o having discussed the article at all, hubby and I were talking about some woman's half-naked costume and he basically said the exact same thing about her that the article did!

So I'm wondering what you all think. I'm tempted to say a woman can wear whatever she wants, but I'm not sure I can really say I wouldn't judge a woman who showed up to a party wearing someting extreme like a bustier and thong and angel wings, you know? Last year one of our neighbors brought her little one year old boy around for trick-or-treating and she was dressed like a very flamboyant hooker. This to me seemed an inappropriate costume for taking your toddler around and walking amongst all the children--if she wore it to a party of adults I wouldn't have thought a thing about it. So it's dependent on situation for me. Personally, jut in general I wear different outfits when I'm out with my grandmother than what I wear when I go out with my husband, you know?

Hubby did say he didn't agree with the article's assumption that the woman was a cheater, but he did think it was attention-seeking. I guess this begs the question of why it's so bad for a woman to want attention! Obviously if you are craving male attention so bad that you ignore your boyfriend, don't talk to your friends, and climb into every guy's lap throughout the evening, THAT is a problem. But if you just show up to an adult party looking sexy, WHY is this so awful??

P.S. Just as an added bit of info, when hubby and I went looking for costumes, 98% of the women's selection was a "sexy" version: "sexy maid", "sexy clown", "sexy witch". So apparently we're *supposed* to dress up this way, but then everyone will think we're cheating on our S.O.'s!

So, I'm just wondering what you all think?

holidays, rl
