I find this term amusing, every time I hear it. Its the phenomenon that causes light to break out of a waveguide when an external object comes in optical contact with the waveguide. This phenomenon is used by some finger print sensorers, robotic tactile sensors and also in recognizing multi-touch (MT) input. Here check out this cool Jeff Hann paper.
