FIC: Instincts- Chapter 2

Apr 12, 2006 16:59

Due to the almost inhuman amount of things I have to do today and tomorrow, I'm going to post what I'd written earlier this morning and continue writing on Friday afternoon (and possibly during the breaks I'll probably need to take during my studying for my Latin Midterm) Anyway, here it is!

The door creaked open slowly and Albus peered at them from within. Harry had never before seen him look so beaten. He reached out tentatively and pulled Minerva into an embrace and Harry quietly sidestepped into the office.

"The sitting room, Harry. We shall join you shortly." Albus growled, looking at Harry with pure venom in his eyes. Harry had always thought Dumbledore to be understanding, beyond the shadow of a doubt. Of course, never before had anything of this nature happened. Perhaps this had finally broken Albus Dumbledore's reason to trust.

Harry quietly retreated into the sitting room beyond the office to find another visitor sitting nervously on the most frilly, comfortable couch Harry had ever seen. Severus had spread out his cloak as much as he could to hide the pink, floral fabric, but to no avail. Apparently Albus was not in such bad spirits that he couldn't pick on Severus. Harry quietly sat next to his lover and felt the coldness seeping into him from the man next to him.

Albus and Minerva entered the room and took the dark purple couch across from Harry and Severus's ridiculously floral one. Harry sunk into the couch and tried to become a smaller target for the six eyes looking straight at him.

"I assume you know how serious this is, Professor Potter." Albus hissed menacingly, cutting straight to the point without even tea and lemon drops. Harry cringed, and Albus took it as a shrug and stood up fast enough to nearly sent the separating coffee table toppling toward Harry. "Minerva is Pregnant! With Your child!" He howled, tears welling up in his eyes.

Harry stood up shakily and looked down at the floor, eyes half closed. "I'm sorry..." Harry murmured, "But I couldn't control my instincts."

Minerva stood up and spoke to Albus in the softest manner that Harry had ever heard pass from those old, strict lips, "I knew I was in heat, and I knew we had another Catimagus in the castle... " she cooed, putting her small hands on Albus's arms, "He didn't know any better... And he couldn't fight it..."

Hearing Minerva shouldering the blame was too much for Harry to take. He stood up and growled at Albus in a way that he would have cringed to think of in any other instance, "Blame is petty! We have to figure out what we're going to do now."

Albus sat down as a few small tears dribbled down his cheeks. Harry sighed and moved over to him, kneeling by his seat and placing his hands on the old man's arm, making a small nook for his cheek. Albus didn't move, either to get away or to accept the apology, and waited for Harry to catch the point and move away of his own will.

When Harry joined Severus on the couch once more, he felt a strong arm circle his waist and pull him closer. Albus kept his eyes set downward as Minerva tried in vain to comfort him.

"Harry's right." Severus choked out, "We still need a plan... What do we do next?"

"There's nothing we can do." Albus whimpered, hopelessly, "We wait for their child to be born."

"And Harry? What about him?" Minerva asked quietly, meekly.

"He'll carry on as he always has..." Albus sighed, looking up at Harry without a single twinkle in his suddenly dim blue eyes.

"Can I still be in the baby's life?" Harry asked, straightforwardly.

Minerva and Albus looked at each other sadly, as though they didn't know what they could possibly say to that. Harry looked at Severus, who had turned his gaze to the floor and pushed himself into the couch even deeper than before.

"Harry," Minerva sighed, tears streaming down her face and dripping from her chin, "It may not survive."

Severus stood and pulled Harry by the arm. They headed toward the door and, without thanking Albus for his hospitality, like they normally would have, left the two alone.
