Feb 10, 2011 05:00

[ It has been over a week since Aether was last seen outside... whatever happened to him during the last experiment, left ruined his interest in going outside for a while. Today, however, he can be found in the town square. Seated on a barrel and with his back pressed against the wall, he's mostly noticeable because of a pile of books in his lap. ( Read more... )

[ Aether continues to read for another dozen seconds before he decides that something is off. The book in front of his face is slowly lowered until his narrowed eyes are finally visible.

He's going to stare for some time before he speaks up. It's easier that way. ]

[He's going to stare back too. ...And maybe fidget a little, what is he supposed to do.]

[ Now this is awkward. Aether is already bad with people except for his housemate, but he has no idea what to do with children. His expression softens, but in that awkward and unsure way that feels like he's about to hide behind the book and hope the kid goes away at some point.

What is he supposed to say in this case? How about... ]

Hello?

Hi.

[What to say, what to say. He seems to be reading something, so let's start with that.]

What are you reading?

Hans Christian Andersen. [ A pause. ] The Steadfast Tin Soldier.

[ It's not the most informative of answers. Aether realizes that. He considers his words for a couple of moments and finally figures out how to expand his explanation. ]

'Tis a fairy tale. [ All right, so it might not be the best explanation. ]

[He's a smart kid at least, and some explanation is better than none.]

Oh? What's it about?

It's about a one-legged toy soldier who has fallen in love with a beautiful paper ballerina. A jealous troll throws him out of the window and the soldier ends up having to go on a long journey across the city before he can see his love again. Although they reunite in the end, the boy who owns both toys throws them into the bonfire and they melt together into a small tin heart.

[ It's a short version, but Aether decides to focus on the parts of it he enjoys. ]

It's a story about a bond that lasts forever, no matter the state or the distance.
