In a little over a year it will be 2010. What will we call it? Will we say two-thousand-ten? Twenty-ten? Ten? Oh-ten? Before we used to say, 'ninety-three', or 'eighty-five' or 'thirty nine' and people knew that you were speaking of a year.
In ten years when you're speaking to a friend about the past are you going to say 'remember in thirteen when we got lost in Detroit?' Whoa, wait, I wasn't thirteen when we went to Detroit. I vote no for just saying ten, or eleven.
Two-thousand-ten? That would seem like it would work. But, this isn't how we spoke about it last century. We didn't say I was born in the year one-thousand-nine-hundred-eighty-five, right? So this doesn't seem to work either.
So that leaves two choices left.
Twenty-ten. Ok. I guess, this one would make sense. It doesn't really follow along anything that we've done before. but, it would say the complete year.
Oh-ten? This one sounds weird, but, it follows our current terminology. We say, 'oh-three' or 'oh-eight'. Why not 'oh-ten'? other than the fact that we generally only say the last two digits of the year. If you're having a chat with your buddy about getting lost in Detroit, saying 'oh-thirteen' would lead me to believe that most people would understand what that means. Despite the fact that it sounds ridiculous.
So, I think that I have it narrowed down to Twenty-ten and oh-ten. I, personally, am hoping for oh-ten. No matter how ridiculous it sounds.
