Chapter 17
“Good morning,”
“Good morning, papa!”
“Hello, prince. You look so good today. Where are you going?” Sho crouches in front of his son, patting his hair while asking.
“Hmmm? Daddy said papa will bring me out today.” Ken answers while looking at Jun. He wonders why Jun is grinning mischievously at him. He looks at his parents confusedly.
“Yup! That’s right! I’m taking you out today.” Sho confirms.
“Just me? Papa not brings daddy along?”
“No, sweetheart. I’m meeting someone else.” Jun said this time.
“EH? How can it be? Daddy should not meet anyone else except papa!” Ken scolds.
“Eh? Why can’t I? I have friends that I have to see occasionally too, do I?”
“B-but..”
Sho chuckles. “What’s wrong, Ken?”
“Hmm..” Ken pouts. “But daddy should only go out with papa.” He sulks.
Jun laughs while crouching too. “You are so cute, you know?” Jun pinches Ken’s nose. “I’m just going out with Uncle Nino. You know him, right?” Jun smirks teasingly at his son.
“I know uncle Nino!” Ken said, huffing at Jun.
Jun laughs again, can’t not. Ken is being too adorable. What’s with he doesn’t want him to go out with other people but only Sho? He shakes his head, ruffling Ken’s hair to a mess. Ken grumbles dissatisfied, pouting more to Jun while walking towards Sho. Sho laughs seeing their banter, but pulls Ken to him to kiss his head.
“Come on, sweetheart. We will drop daddy at Uncle Nino’s café then we will go out together. Okay?”
Ken is still pouting but nods his head obediently.

“Where are we going, papa?” Ken asks after a while sitting in the car.
They have just dropped Jun at the café where he met Sho’s secretary, Aiba-san, a tall, cheerful and handsome man. He is also so friendly. He immediately came to Ken when he saw the boy coming down from Sho’s car and introducing himself a bit eagerly. Ken was scared at first, he immediately hides behind Jun because Jun always remind him to not talk to stranger but warming up pretty fast after Sho’s clear introduction and Aiba’s polite manner. Aiba-san is good to him, he teases and talk to him all in polite way, also he doesn’t touch him unnecessarily unlike his Uncle Shu. He learns after that he is going to accompany his daddy go shopping too, since Uncle Nino only can join halfway and need to meet Ohno-san later.
“I want to find cake.”
“Cake?” Ken asks weirdly.
“Un. Daddy’s birthday is next week, right?”
“Oh!”
“Daddy wanted a chocolate cheese cake. Do you know any bakeries that make the best cheese cake?”
“Eh.. hmm.. I think there is a bakery which daddy often go to.” Ken presses a finger at his bottom lip, remembering.
“Do you remember where?”
“Uncle Nino’s?”
Sho laughs. Well, it’s not like he doesn’t like that choice but considering that Nino is Jun’s friend, of course Jun knows all the goods what Nino’s café serves.
“Why papa is laughing? Uncle Nino bakes good breads and cakes!” Ken pouts at his father.
“Hahahahahah.. sorry, sweetheart, I’m not laughing at you or Uncle Nino. I know his cake must be one of the best but I’m thinking that maybe we can try something different too? It’s daddy’s special day anyway so I want to give him something different.” Sho explains patiently.
“Ooo..”
“So, any suggestion somewhere else?” Sho ask. Honestly he was still a bit surprise about Aiba’s presence at the café just now. He never knew that Aiba is a regular at Nino’s café and they have become somewhat a close friend. Well, he doesn’t disagree or dislike it, if anything, he was grateful. It’s an advantage on his side actually, knowing that Jun now know Aiba and hopefully they will be friends too. Trusting Jun to him today, he casually threatened him to take good care of his ‘fiancé’ which earn him a goofy smile from his secretary and not so gentle back slap as a bonus. Aiba (attempted) to wink at him, but knowing him, he knows he can trust their lives to that man.
“Hmm..” Ken’s low hum brings him back to their current conversation.
“You don’t know?”
“No.” Ken shakes his head disappointedly.
“It’s okay. We will go to the bakery that papa frequent, then.”
“Oh, okay!”

Ken tasted the cake that Sho feed him which sent him squealing in delight immediately. “Hmm!!! This, papa!! This one!! This one is good!!” Ken is bouncing in his seat and his excitement attracts the other customers in the bakery.
“Alright, alright. Calm down, Ken, relax. People are looking at us.” Sho chuckles at Ken’s enthusiasm.
Ken laughs, apparently doesn’t care about his father’s embarrassment. This cake is definitely the best, daddy will surely love it! The thought alone makes him super excited and he can’t wait to celebrate his daddy’s birthday.
“I want this one, papa! Daddy will love it!” He keeps telling his father the same thing until Sho decided to go with his choice.
Ken is basically waltzing out of the bakery when he knows he has made his father follows his request this time. He doesn’t realize he has walked near the road until he suddenly feels a strong tug at his arm which startles him immediately.
“Careful, baby. Watch where you are walking to.” Sho scolds lightly.
Ken blinks at his father. He looks in front, where he nearly crossed the road without realizing it. He steps back, standing close to Sho. “Sorry, papa.” He apologizes, eyes casting down.
Sho just ruffles Ken’s hair before taking his palm in his and they walk together back to the car.
“Actually Ken,” Sho starts after they are on the road. “I have another plan for that night. Not only to celebrate daddy’s birthday.”
Ken looks at his father questioningly.
“You have been asking us about our marriage, no?”
Ken blinks.
“I want to propose to daddy on his birthday.”
Silence.
Sho glances at his side to see if Ken actually heard him or that boy was already sleeping when he doesn’t get any reaction from him. Ken is staring at him, as if he doesn’t believe what Sho has just told him.
“Really?”
“Un.”
Ken looks at his father for a moment before sitting straight, looking at his front. “Does daddy know?” He asks afterwards.
“He is not supposed to know about the proposal thing, but he does know about his birthday celebration.”
“I see.”
“You’re not happy?” Sho asked when he doesn’t get the reaction he expected.
“I.. don’t know.” Ken answers in small voice.
Sho frowns. What is wrong?
“What is propose, papa?” Ken asked, directing his focus to his father again. He doesn’t understand that word.
Sho feels like slapping himself but he refrains. He is driving, better to keep his hands on the steering wheel for their safety.
“Propose is, well.. what I’m going to do while asking him to marry me. Like, present him with a gift, and ask if he is willing to marry me.” Sho explains patiently.
“He wants to!” Ken answers eagerly. He realize his mistake a little too late when he spotted a frown in Sho’s face.
“What do you mean he wants to?” Sho asks suspiciously.
Ken keeps silent. His daddy knew, his father can’t know it too.
“Ken?? What do you mean he wants to? You can’t mean you told daddy what we talked about before don’t you?”
“Hmm..”
“Hm?” Sho raises an eyebrow intimidatingly.
“N-No, he doesn’t! Of course daddy didn’t know. I didn’t tell him!”
“Really?”
“Yes!” Crap. He will be busted again.
Sho goes silent after that, leaving Ken fidgeting in his seat.
“You know it’s not good to lie.” Sho baits.
Ken chews his bottom lip. “I - I..”
“Hm?”
“ActuallyImayhavetoldhimawordortwo.” Ken admits in a breath. Crap. He knows he is in trouble.
Instead of the angry remarks he expected from Sho, he only heard a soft sigh coming out from those lips.
“It’s done.” His father said.
“Papa is not angry?” Ken asks carefully.
“Like I said, it’s done. What did daddy say anyway?”
“He will wait until papa talks to him personally.”
Sho nods, accepting the answer.

Their next destination is a departmental store - a jewelry store.
Sho walks inside the store with Ken, bowing slightly to the front lady. “Hi, I’m looking for an engagement ring, for a guy.” Sho tells immediately.
“Sure, this way, sir.”
They walk towards a corner, where many pretty rings were being displayed. They are in gold and silver. She leaves them to a retailer who will guide Sho to make his choice.
“Which one do you think daddy will like?” Sho asks his son. He let go Ken’s hand to let the boy roam around to look at any rings that catches his attention.
“I think daddy likes the white one more than the yellows. Daddy likes to look at white accessories.”
Silver. Sho walks to the right, where they collected all kinds of silver rings at the display. He goes to the most left section with Ken, which the boy immediately plastered himself to the glass, checking all the rings being displayed. They are in various patterns and shapes, some with gems attached to it, some with beautiful patterns carved or attached on it and some are just empty, simple silver band. Sho and Ken checks simultaneously, eyes sharp on each rings.
“This one, papa.” Ken points to a ring with a crown shape embedded to it. Sho looks at it with distaste.
“..no,”
“But this one is pretty.” Ken pouts.
“Nope. Too heavy for daddy to wear everyday.”
“This one?” he points to the one with small blue sapphires.
“Pretty…”
Ken looks at Sho. “No?”
Sho scrunches his face with a shake of head. “No.”
“But I see all are pretty. Isn’t this hard to choose just one?” Ken whines.
“Let’s see over there. The plain silver bands.”
“But those are too simple.” Ken pouts.
“Can we request to carve shapes on this plain rings?” Sho asks the retailer.
“Yes. It’s for that purpose that we keep these rings simply plain with different thickness. So our customers can choose which thickness they wanted and what pattern they would want to carve.”
“What do you think?” Sho asks Ken.
“Hmmm..”
“You can look at this catalogue for reference on what our previous customers have requested for the patterns. Or you can choose from our ready-patterned silver band too.” She suggested.
Sho take a look at the catalogue, from various carves and shapes specially embedded to the plain silver ring. There are flower patterns, people, landscape and animals too. And love quotes.”
Sho nudges Ken who is still looking at the patterned rings on the display.
“What do you think if I carve Sakura’s flower pattern?” He asks when he has got Ken’s attention.
“Hmm.. Okay.” Ken agrees.
“Do you have any suggestions or pictures of what kind of Sakura pattern can be carved?” Sho asks the retailer.
“Yes. A lot of our customers requested that flower too. These are the famous choices.” She hands Sho another catalogue, this one smaller and thinner. “Perhaps if you can describe how your fiancé-to-be is like, I can help to choose which pattern suits him most?” She asks politely.
Sho smiles triumphantly at his son, who is also grinning mischievously at him.
They describe what’s needed vaguely, but she is fast to understand what kind of person Jun is. She suggested a single flower sakura would be the best, representing a single but firm and strong presence anywhere the person goes. The two tails connected at the end shows that he is holding firm to what he has, and never one to leave if something falls over him, instead embracing it, to be a part of him in the life he will walk through in the future.
Sho knows Ken hardly understood what the lady was saying, but her explanation nearly got him teared up, and he confirms the ring booking immediately. He said that he will pick up the ring by Thursday next week, and she guarantees that the ring will be ready by then.
“Also, can you carve our joint names at the inside of the ring? Right below the connected end tails.” Sho adds before finalizing the payment deposit.
“Yes, of course. If you don’t mind to write the name here, sir.” She pulls out a paper and a pen before handing it to Sho.
Sho writes the name, and gives it to the retailer. ‘ShoJun’ in kanji.
Once everything is settled, he bows deeply to the retailer and the front lady to thank them for their help, and exits the store with bright, satisfied smile.
