I don't want to be in a tin can over the sea
But if we all believe in technology we'll stay in the sky

The nice thing about Tucker is that he takes it in stride when she calls him someone else's name.

(All the girls were Sarah until one of them really was, and she understood the white space behind all those letters and symbols, how it was white like noise like how they say a white room means you're afraid of death, like the static between Harry's teeth. Her smile was the the glowing afterimage from flashbulb stung eyes, there and gone the way Harry was gone, the way he could forget he was around sometimes.

Sarah got it, she knew when not to push the same places Shauna was always trying to get inside and really it must have been easier to love just half a person anyway.

She moved out before he could ask her to.

When she reads the announcement on NASA's website she's less surprised than she should be; he'd always said no, but when you're that fucking smart it only takes until you hit your 30s to have stripped all the useful parts out of everything on the ground anyway. Space is endless and deep and not as cold as they say: she thinks maybe whatever he's been drifting toward their whole lives is out there between the stars.)

At lift-off they're sharing a joint with Navin asleep in the next room, both of them watching the news in companionable silence, iridescent moth-rainbows fluttering around the lights like shadows. Sarah is there on the screen, she's just so proud and grateful; she's one of those women who can cry and not turn into a blotchy mess. Tears light her up from the inside.

"So I'm definitely cuter than she is, right?"

Tucker shifts enough on the couch to be able to slip one hand inside her shirt; for people like them it is, she thinks, the kindest non-answer he can give her.
