So here's the thing. I just saw that list of privileges meme thing what's going around, and I was looking at it and realizing what was applicable to to me. We were read to, all of us - we all played instruments, I played two, actually, there were a million books in the house.
It was a really nice way to grow up. We had art - because my mom painted. We had our own house because my parents built it, actually.
But don't let that make you think we had money. My parents own a farm; and anyone who's ever lived on that knows what that means. It means you make absolutely no money because something is always breaking down or needing to be replaced because it's worn out; every dime you make goes back into just being able to keep going. My folks made maybe...20k a year. And when I was 12 and wanting to learn how to play the bass, I had no idea what that meant. When I turned 16 and drove a dying minivan to school, I had no idea what a big deal it was that I had a car at all.
Now though, I'm getting close to 30 (...O_o 30! I'm still alive! Holy shit! ....alive and uh, totally a mature professional >___>) and I realize what all that stuff means. How hard my parents must have worked just to keep three kids clothed and fed, let alone send one to school in another district because the farming town I grew up in didn't have a school with a gifted program, AND lessons on two different instruments, AND drama club AND orchestra and string ensemble and jazz band and --
You know, I think it's probably time to get off the internet and make a really grateful phone call.
