Norio's Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar, Friday evening

As a mutual birthday celebration, Scully and Bruce were having dinner at the local sushi bar, then considering where to go from there.

"You don't mind this? You strike me more as a steak guy."

"I spent enough time in Japan. I'd even be fine with a bowl of rice," Bruce said.

Scully pointed her chopsticks at him, smiling easily. "That would be a terrible way to celebrate your late birthday, just a bowl of rice." She expertly lifted another tiny bite of sushi to her mouth. "How long were you in Japan? Studying again?"

"About six months," Bruce said. "I was working with a great tutor who'd been a friend of my parents. That's really the most time I've ever spent out of the country in one place."

"What about you? Have you traveled the world much over the years?"

"Off and on," Scully took a sip of the soup, then tapped her chopsticks against her plate, thinking. "Most of the motor courts in the fifty states, it seems like. Mmm. The Arctic Circle. Antarctica, but I was sick on that trip so. Not a high point." She tilted her head. "We did live in Japan for a while, when my father was stationed there." She smiled a little wryly. "I'd like to go other places, and at least the school looks like a good way to do that."
