Hangs head in shame... gwisteria April 29 2011, 16:00:05 UTC
My 15 year old who is going to spain with her school trip on this A.M. and had loads of excitment about that was still out of her gourd and got me up at 5 am to watch the royal wedding...but it was nice to have tea and spend the precious time of the morning where none of my daycare kids were here yet with her before she left me to go aboard for the first time..

Oh, to spend the early quiet hours with her sounds lovely :) I hope she has a great time.

I have no interest in the spectacle, myself. My theory is that there are two main types of people "into' the royal wedding: frustrated Anglophiles who secretly wish they lived in England (whether now or 3 or 4 centuries ago) and Disney-philes who wish they actually were one of the royal couple.

But those are just my theories, like I said I'm not into it and will be quite glad when all is said and done, rehashed, reshown, re-analyzed and redone and we can all move on.

I find myself thinking it's a wishful thinking thing, too. "Maybe, if we throw ourselves into it, we can sort of touch that privilege, and take ourselves out of the reality of inequality and unfairness." It's much the same, to me, as the American Dream - there are a rare few people who "make it", just enough to hold up to the rest and proclaim that the system works and it's all down to you whether you become rich and famous or not.

It strikes me that you've really hit the nail on the head with your Disney comment: selling the fantasy of the rich and famous lifestyle as something to aspire to, while at the same time holding you in place.
