Character Information

General
Canon Source: Glee
Canon Format: television series
Character's Name: Kurt Hummel
Character's Age: 16
Conditional: If your character is 13 years of age or under, please clarify how they will be played. N/A

What form will your character's NV take? Like a typical iPhone, but bright red in color instead of black.

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Unless you count a beautiful singing voice and an uncanny ability to dress himself, none.
Conditional: If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them? Kurt has a very versatile singing voice; he can sing well in both his high and low registers. The songs he sings in the show range from dramatic and emotive to melancholy and subdued. Therefore, his ability will be to heal people with his voice or hurt them, depending on his emotions at the time of singing. For example, if he sang a song when in a happy or pleased state, whomever listens will be healed of whatever wounds or illness they have (severity of the wounds/sickness is something I'll discuss with mods if need be, and of course it's at player discretion whether they want their character to hear or not). If he sang a song when depressed or angry, however, a listening character will experience pain and gradual peeling off of their skin (same rules apply).

As of August 2011, any act of singing has started to affect Kurt negatively. Healing seems to produce the worst side effects, causing Kurt to experience extreme fatigue, headaches and fainting--and recently, coughing up blood. It's inconclusive as to what's causing it, but it appears to worsen with the severity of injuries he heals.

Weapons: None.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.

Character History: This is pretty accurate, but if anything needs to be expounded upon I would have no problem doing so.
Point in Canon: Post 2x18 (Born This Way)

The Glee club has just spent their recent lesson accepting the things about themselves that they'd most like to change. Kurt had been attanding Dalton Academy until this time, and has just now transferred back to McKinley.

Conditional: Brief summary of previous RP history: N/A

Character Personality:

Kurt's actor, Chris Colfer, once described his character as 'a tough guy in designer clothing'. This is basically Kurt Hummel in a nutshell; he is proud, introverted, strong-willed, stubborn and independent. Conversely, he is also deeply empathetic, sensitive, and compassionate. As an out gay teen in a conservative high school, he has faced innumerable odds, but his hardships and pitfalls have largely shaped who he is as a person.

Despite his flamboyant fashion sense and love for theatricality, Kurt is a very internal person. Because of the intolerant nature of his environment, he has crafted an exterior to help himself cope and, essentially, survive. He carries an air of superiority, elevating himself above the judgment of those around him. This causes him to appear arrogant and cold, effectively shielding the more fragile side of himself. It isn't until he finds someone worthy of his trust and confidence that he lets that shield fall, and reveals just how vulnerable and intuitive he really is.

Where most of the other boys around him find strength in their fists, Kurt finds it in words. When bullied, he snaps back with cutting retorts, and is never afraid to speak his mind. He's often very critical of others, including his peers, but isn't beyond extending that criticism to himself. He is by nature an absolute perfectionist, to the point of being nearly obsessive. When he finds a goal he puts his entire heart and spirit into achieving it, often neglecting common sense in doing so. He's incredibly passionate and driven, with no shortage of ambition.

Part of Kurt's introverted nature is his tendency to craft elaborate fantasies about other people. This applies, in particular, to his crushes on boys in his school. He is a dreamer by nature, and an absolute romantic. The isolation brought on by his sexual orientation leads him to seek solace in dreams and fantasies, however far-fetched they may be. The most notable example of this is his season one crush on Finn Hudson, the quarterback on the McKinley High football team (and Kurt's future stepbrother in season two). Though he is perfectly aware that Finn is straight, Kurt decides to pursue him anyway, clinging to the hope that he could somehow live out his fantasies of experiencing a romantic relationship with a boy. Kurt's determination to win Finn over spins out of control, and the result is a confrontation in which Finn uses a homophobic slur against Kurt. The complicated and very polarizing nature of the boys' relationship contributes to Kurt's maturation in season two, in which he plays a much more prominent role.

Kurt's determination to appear strong and indestructible stems from a deep-seated insecurity, which reveals itself most prominently in his interactions with his father. Burt Hummel is the one person whose love and approval Kurt absolutely strives for, and this desire is a reflection of Kurt's tendency to blame himself for things that go wrong. When Burt begins to connect and bond with Finn more than with his biological son, Kurt immediately defaults to the notion that there is something wrong with him and not with the situation itself. In an attempt to get his father's attention, he immediately starts dressing and acting 'straight', and even fakes a relationship with a girl. This behavior also shows how utterly committed he is to things he puts his mind to, even when those things aren't particularly good or healthy for him.

In moments of conflict, Kurt tends to act like a drama queen. When hurt, his initial response is to try to hurt the offending person back, regardless of whether his assertions are right or wrong. Conflict in general is something he tends to shy away from, shielding his feelings in moments of weakness. He hates opening himself up, and hates accepting help from people. When he does, it's from people who have gained his trust, who have proved themselves enough that he knows they won't hurt him.

Kurt is an idealist. The most obvious evidence of this is his dream of being a star performer, but the trait shows his face in other areas as well. Probably the most revealing example is his idealism about romance. Relationships are something that Kurt deeply cherishes; he is fiercely loyal, dedicated and protective of those he cares for. He has made sacrifices and willingly put himself in danger for his loved ones on numerous occasions (throwing an audition to protect his father from having to deal with homophobia, offering to take a beating for Tina, throwing a slushie in his own face for Finn, shoving Karofsky off of Blaine). The extension of this is, naturally, the way he feels about romance. He has a very naïve approach to intimacy, and is actively frightened and repulsed by the idea of sex. He hasn't been able to connect the concepts of romance and sex, and thus shies away from the latter subject entirely. Regarding the former, Kurt projects his desires for a fairy-tale romance by putting his crushes on a pedestal. This happens with Finn, then later with Sam, and finally with Blaine. The difference is that Kurt has matured enough with Blaine to realize that the other boy isn't a perfect Prince Charming, and comes to love him for the flawed human being that he is.

While it may seem minor, Kurt's dedication to fashion is a huge part of his personality. He uses clothing to express himself and showcase how unique he is. There doesn't seem to be a boundary he won't cross where fashion is concerned, and doesn't hesitate to gender-bend with his outfits.

Kurt is very, very stubborn. His beliefs and his pride tend to go hand-in-hand, and he can rarely be dissuaded once he's set his mind to something. He is an atheist and very outspoken about it, and becomes riled when anyone tries to push religion on him. Despite this, he has a very strong set of beliefs, mostly regarding the things and relationships in his life that he deems 'sacred'. He treasures people and moments, enshrining them both literally and figuratively. An example of this is when his father is in a coma from a severe heart attack, and Kurt explains that the time they share together is sacred to him much in the way that religion is to others. Another thing that Kurt built a shrine around in his heart was the concept of a romantic first kiss, which was why he was so devastated when Karofsky stole it from him.

Since the beginning of season one, Kurt has matured in many ways. He is by no means a static character. Not only has he matured physically, but he has shed quite a bit of his waspish nature and grown more emotionally collected and responsive. This can be largely attributed to his transfer from McKinley High to Dalton Academy. The bullying at McKinley reached such a pitch that he was frightened for his safety and his life, and the transfer put him into an entirely new environment. He no longer had to scream to have his voice be heard, or carve out this icy exterior to protect himself. Dalton Academy humbled Kurt to an extent, but not enough to completely crush his identity. The strong spirit he keeps under layers of complex emotions will always endure, even as he continues to grow as the show progresses.

Conditional: Personality development in previous game: N/A

Character Plans: He's just a high school kid, so I can't see him getting overtly involved in any real shenanigans. School is a must, obviously, and probably a job, but it'll take him a while to actually get adjusted to the reality of Siren's Port-not to mention having powers. It'll all be a massive shock.

First Person Sample

[The video starts, and a boy with perfectly coiffed hair and reddened eyes peers at the screen. It looks as though he's trying very hard to put up a front, holding his head up high and deftly hiding the fact that he'd been crying for the past half hour.]

I suppose this is how I'm going to be communicating around here. It's better than nothing, I guess. So I'm taking it you're all in the same boat? Dropped somewhere in Nowhere, Canada, probed for a while and sent on your merry way? Please tell me I'm not the only one.

[He sniffs a little.] And to think I used to be under the impression that Canada was just a place up North full of hippies and free health care.

[Brushes a hand through his hair, sighing.] I'm not really inclined to believe a bunch of men in white coats who spent entirely too much time trying to convince me that they're my friend, so... If anyone has anything useful to share, that would be nice. I kind of need to be on my way here.

Third Person Sample

This wasn't Canada. He'd been to Canada; his seventh grade class had visited Toronto, and they'd gone to Niagara Falls and saw the Lion King musical (he'd cried during the show, and one of his classmates had called him fag for the first time). Granted that had been years ago, but no amount of time could create this twisted, hazy dream of a city, and Kurt was waiting for the inevitable sound of his alarm clock to cut through it all.

It hadn't come yet, so he passed the time by exploring. For an imaginary city, it had a reasonable selection of department stores-and while he didn't have much money to spend, it was comforting to be doing something familiar, something mundane. There was only so long he could tolerate window shopping, however, and he wandered back out on the streets just as the sun began to rub up against the horizon. He took out his cell phone and tried calling his father again-nothing.

People seemed to be disappearing; as quickly as he saw them they flitted away, and then came the siren.

He didn't just hear it-he felt it, as if he were standing next to something wailing and clawing at him, and he shivered. Looking up from his phone, he realized that everyone was gone. He could hear the sounds of doors being shut and bolted, hear the lingering footfalls of someone rushing away, and he remembered-like swallowing an ice cube-what the Greeter had said about the siren.

It couldn't have been true, though. There were still plenty of logical explanations for why he could have ended up here. He could have been drugged, and after all, he-he'd only ever been to Toronto, he hadn't seen all of Canada, and his phone could have been malfunctioning... He could never get four bars with AT&T anyway...

The air was suddenly biting, and darkness seemed to pour all over him like something liquid and thick. Kurt took a step back, his boots scraping against what felt like rough terrain, and he looked down at the pavement-- Except it wasn't pavement. It looked like rotten wood, scratched and degrading-- He heard something moving in the distance-- He ran.

McQueen footwear was as painful to run in as it was to dance in, he learned as he scrambled his way to the apartment building. He could hear something that sounded horribly like scratching, following him up the road, and he couldn't remember running faster in his entire life-- Not during football practice, or during P.E., or down the hall into the locker room...never.

He barely registered the fact that he'd made it into the apartment until he was curled up on a chair, shaking violently, still waiting for the sound of that alarm clock. It wasn't coming, so he took a deep breath and tried to pull himself together. Courage, he thought, and it was funny-- That word normally filled his heart with hope, with love, but now it just made him hurt.

For the first time since he'd arrived in Siren's Port, Kurt started to cry.
