OH! If someone wants to make me a JongKey Icon, I will write them a JongKey drabble as a thank you! :D <3
… That is all. :)
Key pulled himself up off the ground, only to take three more steps and proceed to fall back to the ground. He couldn't believe it, just couldn't believe it. All this time, he'd tried to push on, tried to forget about his two friends that had been lost, but now, now...
All he had were tears of joy. Complete relief at the sight of Jonghyun walking next to Onew with a hand on his shoulder, three other people walking with them that Key had never seen before.
He saw Taemin, the boy frozen for a moment before he broke out in a full sprint toward Onew, knocking Onew to the ground in possibly the tightest hug he'd ever given.
Key composed himself enough to stand and walk, his pace increasing until he was running toward them.
Onew, with the help of Jonghyun, had managed to get himself and Taemin back up off the ground, but Taemin wouldn't let go, couldn't let go, couldn't let this man out of his sight for even a moment.
Key flung his arms around the two of them and he felt Onew's hand on his back, and it was too much. He cried again.
"How did you, where...?" Taemin asked. "How..."
Onew smiled, his own eyes wet. "We've been walking the beach since yesterday hoping to find other survivors, anything, and then just now, from a distance, we saw Jonghyun," he chuckled. "God, I thought I'd never see you guys again..." Onew's face was puzzled, though as he looked at only three of his other four band mates. "Where's Minho?"
"Minho..." Key started, but couldn't get another word out as Taemin took over.
"He...he didn't make it," Taemin said softly.
Onew's face fell as he looked into Taemin's eyes, only hugging the youngest closer to him. "I'm so sorry, Taemin," he whispered.
Taemin hugged him tighter as well. "It's...it's rough, I miss him, I will miss him, but Jonghyun brought back luggage from the plane, and having his things with me made me feel better. When he went back for his things, he got your things too, we...didn't want to...be without you in some way," Taemin said.
Onew looked at the three around him and smiled. "Today I am very lucky," he whispered. "Lucky to have found all of you."
Key grinned. "Yes, you are, but where are you going to sleep it's crowded in our hut with three people already."
Onew laughed. "I'm not that big, we've all slept in close quarters before. Maybe I'll sleep on you, Key."
Taemin rolled his eyes, still hugging onto Onew like he was going to disappear. "Come on, are you thirsty?" Taemin asked. "They brought back water from the plane, and food."
"Oh, god, yes I'm starving."
Taemin smiled and pulled him in the direction of the water. Key watched them walk, his heart near bursting at the sight of Onew. He'd never take Onew for granted again, that was for sure. He was reminded of Jonghyun's presence beside him and looked at the man, his smile fading before he clasped his hands in front of himself and walked back toward the hut.
He heard a quiet scoff from behind him and kept walking. Jonghyun had left him, Jonghyun could come back to him. Key looked ahead and saw Taemin and Onew heading to the hut, Taemin talking excitedly to him. When he got back to the hut, Onew was sitting on Taemin's blanket, talking about how he got to the island in the first place.
"That's amazing," Taemin said softly. "I'm so surprised you didn't drown!"
"Me, too!" Onew said, eating a sandwich that had been warmed by the sun. "I can't believe you guys managed to salvage food and water."
"We were all lucky," Key said, smiling at Onew.
Jonghyun ducked into the hut and smiled at Onew. "It's good to see you," Jonghyun sighed. "We were all really worried."
"You guys were?" Onew said sarcastically. "I thought I'd lost all of you!"
"True," Taemin said with a slight laugh.
"You guys have no idea how happy I am to see you, no idea at all."
"I'm sure we have some idea," Jonghyun said, sitting beside Key but keeping his distance. Key rolled his eyes a little and stuffed their pillow between them.
"I'd say this hut is big enough for all four of us," Taemin said, looking around.
Key nodded, "I agree," he smirked. They all got quiet for a while, just enjoying having Onew with them, a little more completion, before Onew grinned at everyone and they all laughed, elation at the fact that Onew was alive.
~~
Key fell into an easy sleep that night, no longer feeling burdened by worry and fear. His dream had proven true. Of course it was hard to get over the loss of Minho, but he now knew for sure what his dream meant. And from the few moments he had cornered Taemin, separating him from Onew's side, to talk about the dream, he had discovered that Taemin had dreamt a similar dream.
The only thing worrying him now was running out of food and water. And Jonghyun, whose back was to his. He would rather it be that way if it meant not being harassed.
Sometime in the still of the night, he woke up, brain fuzzy but clearing slowly to the sound of soft whispers and quiet crying.
"I know," Onew whispered softly to Taemin.
"I just...I don't want to bother Key because he's got enough to worry about, and I can't go to Jonghyun, I just can't..."
"I know, it's okay, Taemin, you know I'll always be here for you."
"I just miss him, and I can't sleep and when I do I don't want to wake up."
Taemin's voice was muffled and Key heard rustling as the two shifted around a bit.
"It's alright, cry all night if you have to, Min," Onew said softly.
Key shut his eyes as Taemin sobbed into Onew's chest, sounds muffled by Onew's shirt. Key felt his chest close. He knew Taemin was holding it in, but he didn't know that it was to this extent.
"Thank you," Key heard Taemin cry.
Key turned over quietly and snuggled up to Jonghyun's warm back, his own tears falling silently. Life wouldn't be the same without Minho. Taemin wouldn't be the same without Minho. Key hoped for the best for Taemin, that somehow his broken heart would be pieced back together.
Key couldn't sleep, couldn't cry himself to sleep, he could only listen as Taemin would cry to the point of almost screaming into Onew before quieting down only to be hit with another wave of anguish and start all over again.
When Key noticed the black of night starting to soften, he heard Taemin's sobs turn into soft whimpers and slowly into nothing at all. As much as he tried, he still couldn't sleep. The sun was rising anyway, it would be time to get up soon. Taemin would probably sleep all day. Key would want to, but knew he couldn't.
He lay in silence, reflecting on his misfortunes and blessings, when he felt Jonghyun shift in his sleep and decided he should probably turn back over. But he didn't want to see Taemin, he didn't want to risk seeing that young thing's puffy eyes, even if he was asleep. So he remained where he was, arms tucked in the corner where Jonghyun's back met the blanket on the ground.
"Key," Jonghyun said groggily.
Key said nothing back, just closed his eyes. He felt Jonghyun shift and turn over, but he kept his eyes closed.
"I know you're awake," Jonghyun whispered. "You're too tense to be sleeping."
Key slid his eyes open with a long exhale through his nose. Jonghyun would know what he's like when he's sleeping, they'd slept together for so long.
Jonghyun pulled him close and nuzzled his neck, hands safely against his back. That's how Jonghyun stayed for a while, until he needed to breathe easier. He pulled back and ran his hand over Key's arm.
"You cried?" Jonghyun whispered, earning a small nod from Key. Jonghyun's hand rested on the side of Key's head and the older one stroked his cheek. "I'm sorry I was asleep."
"I'm glad you were," Key whispered back, "I don't like crying in front of you."
"You used to cry in front of me," Jonghyun murmured.
Key looked away and shifted his head on the pillow.
"You said you wanted things to go back to how they used to be, Bum, and I'm trying, but you keep blocking it..."
"I'm sorry I don't want you to fuck me on every surface around," Key whispered hotly. Jonghyun scowled at him.
"It's not about that, but I noticed that much, Kibum." Jonghyun rolled onto his back. "It doesn't matter what I try doing, you walk away, you spout off something like that, or you ignore me completely."
"Don't you think I should?" Key asked. "Don't you think I can give you a little bit of punishment for all the pain you've caused me? Don't I get some kind of something to throw back at you?"
"You've been throwing it back the whole time, since the whole mess started."
"And it will never be enough," Key said. "While you were sleeping in someone else's arms, I was alone. I fell asleep cold and woke up cold, while you fell asleep warm and woke up warm. And I'm weak for giving you this much. Because I do love you, even though I hate you so much. I hate who you became. I'm more than my body, you know," he whispered. "I do have emotions, I do have a heart, I do have thoughts and opinions. And at one time, I believed you understood that and respected those things, actually paid attention to them."
"I did."
"But you don't now, do you? The most important thing to you is what you can physically feel, and I've known that, but like I said, I thought you understood that I'm not like that. You're hot blooded, and that's fine. It's fine until you lose sight of what really matters, Jonghyun."
Jonghyun sighed and closed his eyes, then turned back over to face Key properly.
"I love you," Jonghyun said. "I do, completely. And I am trying very hard to be what you want me to be."
"It hasn't even been a week, Jonghyun. You haven't even peeled through the first layer of the shit you caked around my heart, you haven't even begun to remove all the insecurities you placed in my mind. If anything you've added to them because you can't keep your hands to yourself."
"I'm sorry," Jonghyun said simply. "Alright? I won't touch you anymore if that's what you want, I just want this thing to go away."
"I do, too, more than you do, I assure you...I don't mind if you hold me or kiss me, as long as you don't try to get me to fuck you, because really, I don't want to. I don't know what you've done away from me, and it's not like there's any way to find out here on a deserted island."
"I was always careful and safe--"
"Stop." Key said, shaking his head, his eyes instantly wet again. "I don't want to know. I don't want to think about it. I don't want to hear about it from you. I want a piece of paper that I can read so I don't have to look anyone in the eye about this. It might not be for you, but it's embarrassing for me to know that you've been with someone else blissfully after you just tossed me aside like a used paper cup."
Jonghyun had nothing to say to that and Key closed his eyes at the look of guilt on his face.
"Make me want you," Key whispered. "Do everything you can think of, everything you did before that made me fall in love with you."
"I never did anything, Key."
"Exactly," Key whispered, his eyes opening. "You never did anything, you were just you. And I love just you."
Key heard a stirring behind them and fell silent, but Jonghyun merely pulled him closer.
"Don't get up and run away from me today," Jonghyun whispered. "We have all this time, let's make the most of it, Key..."
Key frowned but nodded.
~~
Onew managed to get himself away from Taemin for a little while, even though both of them were reluctant to part from each other. But Onew wanted to talk to Key. Onew was still the leader of SHINee, and Jonghyun and Key’s problems, even on a deserted island, affected the group as a whole.
Once he finally got Key alone, he started his interrogation. Key wasn’t up for it, but participated anyway because Onew would badger him until he got the truth. And he did promise himself that he was never going to take Onew for granted again.
“Tell me what’s going on, Key,” Onew said softly as they walked along the beach.
Key twisted some beached seaweed in his hand and sighed. “Jonghyun just thinks that because we started working things out that everything’s going to suddenly pop back into the groove it used to be in.”
Onew nodded. “That sounds like him,” he smirked.
Key smiled. “Doesn’t it?”
“Is he pressuring you?”
“In his way, yeah, he is. But at the same time he’s not. It’s like he wants me to be okay with him having his way with me no matter where or when he wants it. And I know he’s trying to be good about it, but it’s annoying, really. Because I do want it, but I can’t do it.”
“Makes sense. He hurt you a lot,” Onew said.
“Yes, and I’ve told him that. I told him that I’m still wounded, that I don’t have a desire to be with him like that yet.”
“He will respect that, hopefully.”
“It’s the least he could do,” Key muttered. They walked in silence for a while. “I heard you talking to Taemin last night, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop but, you know me when it comes to someone crying…”
Onew nodded. “He doesn’t want you to worry.”
“I’ll always worry,” Key replied, tossing the seaweed down and brushing his hands on his jeans. “When it comes to Taemin, I will always worry.”
“Everyone will, it’s Taemin,” Onew smiled.
Key smiled, too, remembering why he and Onew had been dubbed Umma and Appa of SHINee, because they really were like parents cooing and coddling their children, having serious conversations like this, concerned about their children’s welfare.
“But he has you, now,” Key said fondly, looking back toward their camp with a chuckle. “He doesn’t want you to disappear, I think.”
Onew grinned. “I know, and if you heard us talking, you know why,” Onew added.
Key nodded. “I do, and I’m thankful that you’re here. You don’t know what a relief it is for me to know that you’re alive. You just, have no clue.”
“And you have no clue how happy I am that three of you survived. I wasn’t expecting anyone to have survived but us four that washed up on the other side of the island. It sounds weird, but, even if Minho-ah didn’t make it, I’m so relieved and happy that you three did.”
Key nodded. “I know, I feel horrible for thinking that way sometimes.”
“Don’t,” Onew said. “Minho…doesn’t have to worry about getting off this island, the possibility of starving to death. From what Taemin told me, he quite possibly died when he smacked his head on that window. And I hope that he was able to go without suffering.”
Key put his hand on Onew’s arm. “Please, I can’t think about it,” he whispered.
Onew gripped his hand tightly. “I’m sorry, I’ll try not to talk about it. It’s all I can think of.”
“Me, too, sometimes, but I can’t bear to hear it voiced.”
Onew nodded and looked out at the water. “Do you think we’ll ever be found?”
“I am believing that we will. We have to be.”
