In the light of dawn Shunsui stood amidst his fellow captains, held up in a rather ill-timed meeting. It wasn’t unheard of for Yamamoto to announce a gathering in the wee hours of the morning, but Shunsui hadn’t expected it to be today when, just the night before, he had drunk himself to sleep.

As he switched his weight from one foot to the other, he tried his best to force his eyes to remain open, even if it were just to be a little slit, and suppress the bile that threatened to rise through his throat. It wouldn’t do for a very good morning for him if he were to spill half the contents of his belly onto Yamamoto’s glossy floor.

It had been one of the nights whereupon Shunsui felt a painful stab of envy, jealousy, in his heart. This was due to the sudden appearance of one Captain Zaraki Kenpachi who, rather rudely, intervened in a peaceful conversation he was having with Jushiro, only to drag him away to the Eleventh Division for gods-knew-what. Jushiro never returned after that, and the sneaky grin Kenpachi had plastered to his face was what drove Shunsui back to his own division and bury himself in a heap of sake.

Even now, as Shunsui stole glances at Jushiro from across the room, he could spot a faint bruise on the man’s collarbone. His hair was a tad bit dishevelled, obviously from being shocked awake by the sudden news of a meeting. Kenpachi himself hadn’t the usual bells in his hair, resulting in a messy cascade of rough tresses splayed about his shoulders.

As Shunsui flicked his eyes from one man to the other, he couldn’t help but imagine what it was like to… well, to be in Kenpachi’s shoes. The both of them were quite good friends, to say the least. Shunsui was fond of taking him out for drinking sessions when Jushiro was too busy to join him, but it was difficult to see that he was capable of having a shot with Jushiro when Shunsui himself had known him for far longer than he could even remember.

Jushiro’s silky white strands, pale skin and soft eyes that shone with unreserved affection - Shunsui wanted them all to himself. He wanted them so badly that whenever there was an evening of drinks with Kenpachi, he’d ask the man just how it felt like to be in bed with Jushiro. Of course, he kept it subtle, only moving a little past boundaries when he got the man drunk - which wasn’t often as he rivalled Shunsui in alcohol tolerance.

But, truth be told, Shunsui wouldn’t have minded if he were to… share Jushiro with Kenpachi. He knew it was wrong, a disgusting, pitiful move in order to gain affection, but still he accepted it. Wanted it, even - anything to feel Jushiro’s skin against his own.

Yamamoto’s aged voice rang out through the hall, dismissing the captains and bidding them a good day.

With a heavy head, Shunsui gave his teacher a respectful bow and made for the exit. Once he was outside, breathing in fresh air that his lungs so craved for, the sudden flare of familiar spiritual pressure made him turn around.

“Captain Zaraki.” Shunsui tilted his head to the side, giving the other man a lopsided grin. “Fine morning, isn’t it?”

Kenpachi responded with a scoff as he fixed a piercing glare on Shunsui. He appeared like he wanted to say something, but when he opened his mouth, Jushiro interrupted him with a jovial greeting to his best friend.

“What say you to some breakfast? Master Yamamoto’s quite the early bird today, isn’t he? I didn’t have the chance to-”

“Shut up, Ukitake,” Kenpachi growled, and jerked his head to the side to indicate that he wanted Jushiro to leave. Jushiro’s eyes hardened, annoyed at how he was brushed aside as if he was merely an irritating youngster.

Seeing the look he knew all too well, Shunsui forced a small chuckle and stepped forward, but froze in place when Kenpachi nodded at Jushiro with a more softened expression. It seemed like a silent signal, one that only a couple could interpret, and that seemed to lighten Jushiro’s mood a little. Though it wasn’t possible for others to catch the movement, Shunsui was quick enough to see him brush his fingertips against the back of Kenpachi’s hand, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips, and with a nod to Shunsui, Jushiro left them.

“Ye’re starin’.”

Pulled out of his sudden trance, Shunsui faced Kenpachi, who eyed him with a knowing look. There was a mixture of irritation and spite in that single grey eye of his, as well as a sense of protectiveness that was only evident whenever the pink-haired child was present. Shunsui took one look in that eye and already he knew what was to become of him if he were to resume indulging himself. The air had gone stale, thick and heavy with Kenpachi’s overwhelming spiritual pressure.

“Stop starin’,” he growled between his teeth, and with that said, he turned on his heel and left in the direction where Jushiro had just disappeared.

Shunsui watched him go, green with envy that could never be washed away even by the finest of sake.
