~Movies For May~
* - Killed Myself
** - Only Contemplated Killing Myself
*** - Purgatory
**** - Good Times
***** - Wicked Awesome
Four Feathers - British officer(Heath Ledger) who resigns his post right before his regiment ships out to battle the rebels. Perceiving his resignation as cowardice, his friends and fiancee (Kate Hudson) give him four white feathers, the symbol of cowardice, but little do they know he's actually going undercover to save his best friend (Wes Bentley) to redeem his honor. ***
Primer - These two guys build a machine in their garage and try to figure out exactly what it does. They find that time inside the box is different than outside it. So is it a time machine? I didn't understand most of the dialogue but I got the idea of most of it. And the fact that the budget for this film was something like $7,000 was really the most amazing part, because it doesn't look cheap at all. ***
Four Rooms - It's four different stories within a hotel done by four different directors (Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino) tied together by a rather eccentric bell hop (Tim Roth). I thought it was interesting how they edited these stories together. Tim Roth is so weird but that's probably why I like him so much. My favorite story is probably the Tarantino. It the funniest of the four. ***
Ladder 49 - It was a good movie that made a great point but totally depressing. I will totally admit this movie mad me cry. It shows you how fearless these men are. I mean could you jump into a burning building knowing there's a possibility you might die? Not Me. But it did also have it's funny moments....it's wasn't a complete drag. Joaquin Phoenix plays the rookie fireman and John Travolta plays his chief. Bottom line great cry-worthy story. ****
The Prince & Me - I surprised that I actually liked this movie...you know if you ignore how it doesn't make sense. It's basically a fairy tale love-story about a pre-med student who falls in love with a Danish Prince who refused to follow the traditions of his parents and has come to the US to "straighten out." Paige (Julia Stiles) and Eddy (Luke Mably) are two very pretty people who are enjoyable to watch and have great um chemistry so to speak. ****
Kinsey - Follows the life and career of Alfred Kinsey (Liam Neeson), a pioneer in the study of human sexuality, which started in the 1940s and continued till his death. He saw that science addresses sexual behavior and that was his approach. I loved this movie and really felt for his wife played by Laura Linney, who is adorable in this role. Peter Sarsgaard and Chris O'Donnell are two more great things about this movie. The cast is as amazing as this story. I really couldn't believe some of the things that were taught before his research. ****
The Beach - This movie was a mind-fuck but great. I am a big Danny Boyle (director) fan and now was a good time to see this movie because I respect Leonardo DiCaprio, I didn't a few years ago. The basic outline is a young American not quite ready to surrender himself to responsibility or mainstream society, travels to Asia and discovers a map that takes him to a secret island. On this island lives a group of people who have also abandoned the "normal" life. Guillaume Canet play one half of a very cute french couple...he's really hott and he's in one of my favorite movies. Robert Carlyle puts in a great creepy performance as a drugged out founder of the island community. ****
The Phantom of the Opera - We all know the story a disfigured musical genius hides in an Opera House, terrorizes the company and patrons for the unwitting benefit of a young protege whom he trains and loves. It was so beautiful, the costumes, sets, actors...oooo the actors. Gerard Butler plays a hott phantom, Emmy Rossum is the very pretty Christine and the Norfolk native Patrick Wilson is a handsome Raoul. But my favorite character is Carlotta played by Minnie Driver, she makes me giggle and you gotta love her dog. ****
Paparazzi - I rented this because it was recommended to me by Dylan. A rising Hollywood actor (Cole Hauser) decides to take personal revenge against a group of four persistent photographers to make them pay for almost causing a personal tragedy involving his wife and son. It really did show how sick the paparazzi can be. The things that did made me cringe and it was so sad to think that these are the things that they actually do. But it kept building and building and I was waiting for it to get really good....and it never did. It built up to nowhere and I was actually disappointed it didn't go farther. ***
LA Confidential - I loved this movie!!! The simplest explanation is a shooting at an all night diner is investigated by three LA policemen in their own unique ways. The three cops are Sgt. Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey), Officer Bud White (Russell Crowe) and Det. Lt. Edmund Exley (Guy Pearce) and I liked them all in a really weird way. The film is set in Hollywood in the 1950s which adds a vibrance and class to the story. It just an all around great noir crime film. Danny De Vito plays Sid Hudgens the king of tabloid in true De Vito fashion and the always beautiful Kim Basinger plays high class call girl Lynn Bracken. *****
The Office (Season 1) - The story of an office that faces closure when the company decides to downsize its branches. A documentary film crew follow staff and the manager Brent (Ricky Gervais) as they continue their daily lives. Gervais also co-writes and directs the series. This show makes me laugh so hard...Gervais plays this character so well. And the jokes between Gareth Keenan (Mackenzie Crook) and Tim Canterbury (Martin Freeman) are hilarious. I love Martin Freeman he's so adorable. If you have the opportunity to see this show please do, you won't be disappointed. *****
Rounders - A young man (Matt Damon) is a reformed gambler who must return to playing big stakes poker to help a friend (Ed Norton) pay off russian loan sharks. It's a great story more about life of a gambler than the friendship but still interesting. Norton is such a jerk but you still like him cause he's just got that way about him. Damon is loyal and very likable cause you know he's gonna stick up and by his friend. A very stylish and fun movie. ****
Home Movies (Season 1) - A very cute cartoon that's loosely based on the childhood of creator Brendon Small , an eight-year-old visionary uses his friends Jason and Mellisa as actors in the homemade films he directs. This cartoon is done in squiggle vision which is awesome. I love Brendon's mom and his soccer coach McGirk. ****
The Claim - A prospector sells his wife and daughter to another gold miner for the rights to a gold mine. Twenty years later, he (Peter Mullan) owns much of the old west town named Kingdom Come. A surveyor (Wes Bentley....sexy!) and his crew scouts the town as a location for a new railroad line and Mullan's daughter (Sarah Polley) suddenly appears. The landscapes are gorgeous and it is amazing to think that people actually lived in place like that during the gold rush. Milla Jovovich is a very sexy madam of the local cathouse......god she's hot. ***
Dogtown & Zboys - This documentary takes a look at the transformation of skateboarding from its former image as a land-bound pastime for surfers to its status today as an actual sport. Starting from the California surf community of Dogtown, the film follows the evolution of modern skateboarding through it's 70's heyday,it centers around the three stand out Z-boys Stacy Petralta, Jay Adams and Tony Alva. Then shows the decline during the 80's, and then its eventual return in the 90's. Who would've thought that riding a board could make you millions of dollars and turn you into a world wide sensation. *****
Riding giants - Documentary detailing the origins and history of surf culture. It's directed by former Z-boy Stacy Peralta. It's a great movie for surfers or aspiring surfer or even those kind of interested. It follow the sometimes-life-and-death drama that big-wave riding entails. It is visually stunning and makes you wish you could have taken part in this amazing history. It truly shows how mother nature controls all no matter how much man has accomplished. There will probably never be a wave big enough to fulfill these guys but there is a beautiful spiritual side to the quest. ****
The Cooler - The unluckiest man in Vegas (William H. Macy) - a guy whose bad luck is contagious - is used by the last of the old time mob run casinos to kill high rollers' action. That is, until he falls in love with a cocktail waitress (Maria Bello) and gets "lady luck," which throws the situation into reverse. Things turn nasty when the casino director (Alec Baldwin) tries to break up the romance. It's cute in a depressing way. I love William H. Macy, he's on of my favorite actors. ***
