I'm nearly a third of the way through my 100 drabbles and I thought it was about time I posted some. I'm posting these in sets because otherwise my tag system will get all confused. There is a table, which I'll post once I've finished, with all the drabbles linked on it. I refuse to do it more than once because that's too much like hard work.
1. Holiday
Harry had been dreading the Easter holidays. He'd managed to avoid his one year old stepbrother all Christmas, while giving the appearance of being polite, but it had been hard work. He didn't think he could face hiding in his room again.
He needn't have worried. He'd barely stepped through the front door when a small child cried, "Harry!" and attached himself to his leg. Harry hadn't thought Willie would remember him. When the surprise wore off he smiled down at Willie. It was hard to hate the one person in the house who was pleased to see him home.
17. Kindness
Harry frowned over the board. Teaching his stepbrother to play chess had been a good idea and at least he meant Willie wasn't the one getting to play with his father, when it should be Harry. When Willie finally made the move Harry had been predicting ten minutes ago, Harry to remind himself not to move his rook straight away. Willie smiled, pleased with his choice and Harry decided that maybe teaching him as they went along would help.
"You don't want to do that," he said.
Willie frowned at the board and Harry settled in for a long afternoon.
76. Author's Choice
Will turned over the black queen and said, "Can I have one too?"
Harry frowned - he'd expected Will to move the queen.
Will held the piece up so Harry could see the 'A' inscribed on the base. He hadn't known his stepmother had her own chess piece now. "Which do you want?" he asked.
"What's yours?"
Harry showed him the white knight with an 'H' underneath.
"Can I have the other one?"
Harry hesitated at Will copying him, but decided if Will wanted to be a knight riding in on a white horse, Harry wasn't going to stop him.
Extended version (151 words):
Will turned over the black queen and said, "Can I have one too?"
Harry frowned because he was rather expecting Will to move the queen, not examine it.
At his silence, Will passed the piece over and Harry could see an 'A' inscribed on the base. He put it back on the board carefully. He hadn't known his stepmother had her own chess piece. In light of that, he supposed Will should have one too. "Which do you want?" he asked.
"What's yours?"
Harry picked up one of the white knights to show him the 'H' underneath.
"Then can I have the other one?"
Harry hesitated at Will copying him. But decided that if Will wanted to be a knight riding in on a white horse one day, then who was he to stop him? So they abandoned their chess game temporarily, to carve a 'W' on the other white knight.
63. Ice-cream on sand image
Harry looked over as he heard the cry. He discovered Willie had dropped his ice cream on the sand. Harry had been embarrassed enough, forced to come on a family holiday with a small child and he'd been ignoring them as much as possible and doing his own thing.
"You should give him some of yours," Harry's stepmother suggested.
Harry gave her a look of horror. "He shouldn't have dropped it."
Harry was more horrified when his father asked Willie if he'd like another one. Already annoyed at the preferential treatment Willie got, Harry stalked off, licking his ice cream.
51. Ants on a picnic blanket picture
Harry tucked his stepbrother into bed as he thought of a story and how to embellish it.
"It was a school picnic," he began, "and everyone was eating their sandwiches when we were attacked ants. They weren't just normal sized ants, either. They were this big." He put his hands out to demonstrate. Willie's eyes widened. "Fortunately, they were allergic to corn beef and they all died. But they were so big we couldn't just leave them there, so we had to bury them." Harry couldn't resist ending on a warning. "So beware, the next time you have a picnic."
