Elaine and Sarah's phone call 7.30pm saw Harry and Elaine seated at a table for four in Il Tartufo. Harry was nervous and it wasn't helped by the knowledge that Sarah and Elaine had spoken to each other without him present.
"You look nice," he said to Elaine as she poured them each out some iced water.
"You said that already."
He frowned. This evening wasn't going to go well at this rate.
"Harry." Having finished with the water she reached over and took his hand. "We've discussed this before. I just want to meet some of your friends. I won't be jealous."
"You can't be sure of that."
She sighed and let go. "No. But have you ever asked Sarah to marry you?"
He tried hard not to, but couldn't help but laugh at the idea. Which he rather imagined Sarah would have done if he'd ever tried asking her.
