Today in class we were discussing modern jewry. Our teacher drew a scale from one to ten on the board. On the 1 side it said Jewish American and on the ten side it said American Jew. An example of a 1 is maybe having the knowledge that you or your ancesters are jewish and not really practicing it and an example of a ten is maybe observing all the jewish laws and practices, but those dont necessarily have to be like that. We went around the room and each of us talked about where we are on the scale and why. We had to weight factors in like-- family, personality, morals, practices, values, where you live, kashrut, things like that. It made me curious about what others would say about it. So, what do you guys consider yourselves? Jewish Americans? Or American Jews? Where on the scale would you be?
Ill tell you what I said..
I said that I would be an 8. Even though my family may not keep kosher and are not shomer shabbos I still feel the connection. I mentioned that I am involved in USY and teach little kids hebrew. I also said that in my college dorm I want to have a mezuzah in my doorway and even an israeli flag on the wall. I told the class that I felt I was more spiritual than I was religious. I think about G-d and me being a Jew everyday of my life. If im in a tough situation I really try to do the good, jewish, moral thing. I have a strong spiritual connection to judaism and I said that I dont feel you have to keep shabbat and such to be connected to G-d. That is why I chose and 8. What would you guys do?
If you get a few minutes let me know. I would be really interesting what you have to say.
Lots of love,
Kelsi
