That is a pretty hopeless way of looking at things. Despite all the bullshit around you, always remember that you are in control of your own reality and existence. And the only thing you can affect is how you treat yourself and other people. You can have whatever outcome you want in this world.
Just so you know, many, many people in the U.S. make their living hand crafting unique, and special pieces, whether it be furniture or textiles or what have you.
The good old days are just that: OLD. We live in a world full of opportunity and luxuries, things that people in previous generations could only dream of having. The capitalistic, or as you might call it "money hungry" society we live in affords us a lifestyle of consumption and leisure. Revel in it, take advantage of it, and thank God you're able to make whatever the hell kind of living you want..without restriction.
People do work hard and put food on the table for their families and love their family more than money itself. It's just a shame that you've never met anyone like that.
This is not a post to lecture you, but instead one to instill in you some hope and a bit of a reality check.
