This afternoon after class I went to CVS for a few essentials and noticed that the Christmas decorations and music are all ready in full swing...isn't it only November 3rd? Come on!
And then...I saw it...like a light shining in a dark corner...
There, among the red and green and gold was a section on the end of one of the aisles, devoted entirely to...Chanukah!
There were menorahs and candles and electric menorahs and REAL gelt and normal dreidels and electric musical dreidels and the kind you put candy (like gelt) in.
I know I shouldn't be this excited to see it, but last year Chanukah occured during finals week. In an effort to keep one of my favorite holidays alive, I had to make my own decorations because our local CVS decided that the only Chanukah item they wanted to carry were "coins of the nation". My campus has a fairly decent Jewish population, and as such, provide a demand that the store was missing out on. I complained to the employees there and the manager AND made a phone call.
It turns out I wasn't the only one - when I went to the manager to thank him for the new merchandise available, he told me that there were a bunch of complaints in the store and a few to the main phone line.
I guess people can really change a small part of the world with just a little effort.
