there's market research behind this, I'm sure

I usually find daytime TV selections too aggravating to have on even as background noise when the place feels a little too quiet before I go do work.  Yesterday, though, I didn't have to be at work until 3 in the afternoon and I found myself turning the TV on for "company" while I had lunch.

Here are the reasons that I should not do this, especially when hormonal:

1. I found myself getting teary-eyed over a Safeway commercial.

2. I started (mentally) correcting and re-writing a lame commercial for a local tech school.  Some of the people saying how great it was to have gotten a degree from there didn't even pronounce it correctly and there was a strangely high proportion of "grads" who had prominent gaps between their front teeth.  Not that that's bad in and of itself, they just may want to be more conscious of promoting diversity among their students.

3. Another commercial totally confused me for a minute.  At first, I thought I was watching a young man in a hobo costume promoting something - a paycheck-lending service or a used-car dealership or evening degree program?  Anyway, it sort of caught my attention for a minute because I thought it was either going to be hilariously clever or hilariously inappropriate.  I wish I had a picture to demonstrate my point, but the young man had a 3-day beard growth, a scruffy t-shirt with a tweed jacket too large for him over it, and he wore a clashing tweed fedora propped on his head at a jaunty angle.  Turns out that he was supposed to be an example of how the service could improve one's life and he did no "after" picture to compare to the tweedy "before."  Perhaps I am so much a child of the hyperstyled trends of the 80's that it still throws me off after all this time, or perhaps the wardrobe person for that commercial could have tightened the look up a bit.  All I know is that I have no idea, in hindsight, what the commercial was actually trying to sell me.

4. I was done with my lunch by the time any show actually came back after commercial break.
