So, I joined Mat's team in a Cambridge softball league (very informal) and I went out and got a glove and everything! I'm not great, and was batting 0 until the last at-bat of last week's game, when I actually started a 2-out rally with a single, and then even scored a run. Woot!
After the game, we had a little batting practice, and I was out in the outfield trying to catch some hits from Mat "The Bat". :-P They really do call him that, because he's actually very good. Anyway, he hit a pop-up, which I ran to catch, and somehow, some way, I caught the ball in the perfectly wrong spot of my glove. Or rather, didn't catch. At first I thought the pain was just the sting of ball on glove, but after taking the glove off, I realized it was perhaps more serious, and I couldn't move my pinky finger, which promptly blew up to the size of a small sausage. A small purple sausage. I specifically didn't want to go to the ER (long wait, $100 co-pay), so I made an appointment the next day with the urgent care peeps at my PCPs office. I walked in, showed the doc my finger, and she said "You need to go to the ER". Do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars. Awesome.
So, all of Friday afternoon and evening were spent in the ER - waiting, getting x-rays, waiting, falling asleep, waiting, getting the nurse to smuggle me in some food, talking to Mat on the phone, waiting, and finally I saw the doctor. She showed me the x-ray, and you don't need to be a freakin' doctor to figure out the finger/side of my hand was broken. There was a big-ass indent, which looked like someone had taken a chisel and gone to town. Fabulous. So they put me in a splint and bandage, and told me I needed to call the "hand clinic" first thing on Monday morning to make an appointment with a hand surgeon, to figure out if I'll need some kind of surgery or cast-setting to fix the sucker. That appointment is at 9:45 this morning, and of course, I woke up early and couldn't go back to sleep. So I decided to post a nice little entry for you folks, to update y'all on the sitch. Hopefully I can come back later with good news, like "Yay, no surgery!".
Anyway, everyone should go see the movie "UP". It gets 5 stars, for sure. It was on the same level as WALL-E, I thought. It was entertaining, funny, and actually quite emotional! I found myself tearing up a couple of times, and I'm not a movie crybaby. It was really really really good. And of course the short before the movie was great, too. :-P
All right, I will be back later with a hand-y update. *groan*
