Wooooo! Man, I am super gonna like this year's BotCon set, if the first two previewed figures are any indication. First Pyro/Spark and now
Breakdown.
Breakdown has a special meaning to BotCon.
G2 Breakdown (on the right) was the
first BotCon exclusive way back in 1994. Hasbro canceled the G2 Stunticons and Protectobots, and gave a limited run of Breakdown to BotCon for its attendees. I didn't attend BotCon until 1998, but I know my BotCon lore.
(There are maybe two or three sets of the rest of the
unreleased G2 Stunticons and Protectobots out there. They go for a lot. Okay, technically, they don't go for anything, since they've already gone. I can't see them changing hands very often.)
Since this year's theme is Generation 2, of course they have a callback to the convention's first exclusive. I was really really hoping they'd do this and they totally have! (There's only 300 of the original out in the wild, so, uh, this new version'll be much easier to get ahold of.) He's made out of Sideswipe, since Sideswipe was also a Lamborghini (plus there's that unofficial Action Master Sideswipe as
G2 Breakdown), and he's once again that delicious CGA monitor color scheme. Miami Vice, represent!
I'm also pleased that he's still got that bizarre roof deco and his name printed on his doors. It's the early nineties distilled into plastic form. Learning this guy was happening was an awesome birthday present.
