Today's digital age

Feb 13, 2017 14:14

Picking up a book to read after many moons of exams,  I find digital reading to have a flaw. Reading on the same device used for social connections,  and other tasks poses high danger of distraction.  An article about Sasikala, a video about more efficient ways to cut fruit, beautiful songs,  poetic ways to contribute to the world, semantic arguments about veganism, deep thoughts on motherhood....Facebook offers hundreds of things to "consume" that are both enriching as well as stifling. I'm interested in much and often love the breadth of thought and exploration provoked by my diverse friends through their shares. But the more short articles I read and am enriched by, the less time I have for longer and self directed reading.  While challenging my own comfort zones and being taken on journeys through others eyes is  valuable,  I'm struggling with how to balance this with my own,  private agenda for reading and life.

This social media dilemma is one that I need to learn, practice and flex thoughtfully so that I can teach my children these navigation tools. In a world with too much information and available content,  I'm stuck with the challenge of the previous generation whose challenge was to find and consume content rather than curate and curb it.  I welcome tips and tricks from those who have found solutions that work for them.
