Global change

How long has it been since smoking was allowed in the cabin but disallowed in the lavatories ? Why are blue prints of airplane interiors still including ashtrays ? Humanity has changed where not smoking is now part of the global culture. Change of such magnitude is possible within a single lifetime and the primary reason was health and wellness despite the tobacco companies’ economic interests. What other change is possible across humanity ? What should change makers be aiming to collude towards ?

Today we commit mass genocide and torture on a global scale in the name of food. Far disconnected from required nutrition, animals are being bred for torture, maiming, refrigeration and wastage on a mind boggling scale. While human injustices are vast and compelling and environmental concerns threaten our sustainability, in my books the scale and breadth of animal cruelty eclipses most other ethical justice issues that humanity is engaged wrongly with.

Could there be a world where mindless animal consumption built on the back of cheap and barbaric killing strategies could go the way of smoking ? How does one examine this injustice and why does it exist ? Far from the mythical images of carnivorous mammals, we are thoughtful, social beings wont to abuse power for our selfish benefit. Empathy and compassion have to extend to animals in order to imbue the necessary outrage to cause change. Smoking cessation was self serving and therefore successful. Perhaps it is only such self serving causes that have the best chance of becoming a successful movement.

What other self serving goals may humanity have ? Exercise and nutrition ? Meditation and maturity through a spiritual awakening ? Improved self control ? The global change of attitude towards smoking inspires me to dream that all sorts of change is possible to achieve with the right incentives.
